I’m bummed. Dunno if I can think of three gb shows besides these that just totally miss me. I even like a lot of the folks involved! Oh well, I wish the hosts and fans the best.
"Fighters are fun for a set of people to play then the hardcore is left."
I see some of the points about profitability you're making, fighters are definitely the poverty esport, but I don't think this point is unique to them. I don't play other game competitively, but I've definitely heard friends talk about like, getting on the new CoD before the sweats learn it. In mobas and shooters it seems even harder to me, because having teammates of a different skill level can tilt the matchmaking, right? (although I personally think the lack of outside elements like teammates is part of what gives fighters the perception of being harder than other genres; there's no one to blame but yourself when you lose)
IMO the biggest problem with player retention in fighters has been the booty netcode. Of course you're going to get lopsided and/or unplayable matches when the only good connections available are within a ~60 mile radius. So you get matchmade with beasts or play at -14f. Terrible experience for new players. I'm hopeful that the proliferation of good rollback based netcode and smart matchmaking systems can at least keep fighters afloat until they figure out what the new landscape should look like.
Dragon Quest 5. Your dad beats up monsters while babysitting you, you spend years in demon prison, you get married, and eventually fight the demon lord with your kids. Spans a full hero's arc of "My dad can beat you up" to "My kids can kick your ass."
My first instinct is GG. I'm literally playing GGAC+R right now, and have been playing GG on and off for uh... more than a decade at least. I played a lot of BB when it came along and had a committed local crew at the time so I had a lot of fun with Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift, but fell off hard after that. Thing is - I don't think we've really seen them go back to the drawing board for BB.
It's my opinion that Xrd and BB were both designed with the intention of being at least a little playable in a delay based netcode environment. Having now played ACR with rollback netcode, I don't think there's any more need to be so shy about 2 frame cancels and short static difference windows. Shit can be stupid anime fast again.
Strive looks cool. I hope it's freaking dope. But I super wonder what a legit new BB would look like designed from the ground up with a goal other than, "Let's make this work on 2009 X Box live."
It might be less Rogue-y than what you're looking for, but I had a helluva time playing Tangledeep. Really interesting character building and surprisingly fun combat and exploration. Comes with varying permadeath and carry-over options as well.
