All of that said, she definitely did click on the guy, not the dumpster.
The blue indicator on the ground (showing direction) and the red indicator (showing damage) were definitely on the dumpster, not the guy. As much as the game can be finicky (with line of sight etc.), it told you exactly what was going to happen there.

Because you're bad, UI. Very very bad. And you should feel bad.
It's legitimately bad. Sure if you play it enough you learn to work around it and its quirks but thats not what makes for good UI. Good UI should be able relay information to you in a clear and understandable way.
