Skyrim is STILL in it. At this point i'm going to make a dash for the s-rank and then put it on ice until all the dlc is out.

You're actually missing out on extra Praxis points by not unlocking certain augs like the Punch through Walls aug, and augs that make stealth and takedowns easier to do, thus, rewarding you with more XP. So yeah, the more Praxis points you spend, the more Praxis points you'll gain.

I didn't mean to imply I haven't spent ANY points. I quickly got to Hacking 5, Icarus Landing, Heavy Lifting, and Punch Through Walls (plus an extra set of inventory columns). However, once having gotten those (and heavily upgrading a 10mm with silencer, armor piercing, laser, etc).. most of the stress points melted away. To be frank, the most powerful augment in this game is the save/load anywhere system. ;)

But in any event I wasn't soliciting DE:HR upgrade advice-- I might have been too vague in my Subject header.

My real question was far more general: What do you think about, when you think about upgrades? (In all games). Maybe I shouldn't have made it so DE:HR specific, heh.

So my general upgrade philosophy in all games is: Hoard Upgrade Points Until I:

  • Better understand the relative effectiveness/need of each skill.
  • Am stymied and cannot proceed any further without upgrading something.
  • Maximize my min/max opportunities.

I should probably confess I sometimes just like hoarding points for the sake of hoarding them, but that's a different topic.

DE:HR is a great example-- with the exception of a few points spent early in the game, I've still managed to stall most upgrades and have not felt any significant pinch. This includes all social battles, alternate objectives, etc. Now, that's probably more of a statement on the true efficacy of upgrades in this game, but I'm curious what your own general upgrade philosophies tend to be.

About to start Tai Yong Medical mission in Shanghai.. Maybe I'll spend some points.

I like to use the apartment as a weapons locker. I almost have 1 of every weapon laying around the joint.

Selling guns in this game is kind of silly, but if you do it right you can make a lot of credits early on. When I kill anyone who drops a gun in Detroit, or any area that has a vendor nearby, I will literally run each gun one by one back to a vendor. By doing them one at a time you won't pick up a gun and have it turn into ammo, which is worth crap compared to the gun. I decided early on I was never going to use shotguns so every time i picked one up off a gang banger in Detroit I would run it back to the vendor for 750 credits. Then I started doing it for other guns. If I already have an upgraded version of the gun, I'll drop it on the ground while I run the crappy one back to the vendor. I also made about 5 trips to the police station to rob the armory one combat rifle at a time.

Dude! I did the exact same thing.

There is so much money in the game there really is 0 need to do this :)

There is zero reason to do this for monetary reasons, but for some of us, it's the ONLY thing to do to satisfy the voices in our heads. :)

Some games will strike a particular chord in me and compel me to take my time and wander. This is one of those games-- I've been playing on and off for three days, and only now getting around to the final mission in Detroit 1. No stone is left unturned.

At least it's not as free-form as Fallout 3, wherein I spent over 300 hours before finally deciding to move on to another game. Ultimately, it's all about the degree to which you're willing to imaginatively invest.

It breaks my heart to see it go, but the real SWG died after NGE, as far as I'm concerned.

Flawed? Sure. But unique and captivating in a way no other MMO was before or after. Sorry it didn't work out, SWG-- I hope to run into your spiritual successor in the future.

My second thought was to wonder what Raph Koster had to say about this. Well...:
