Best of 2013

It's been one crazy year but that didn't stop games, and even new consoles, to arrive during the year. We saw som lows, some surprises and some highs. For me, 2013 will always be remembered for having to say goodbye to Ryan Davis but let's not get too depressed about that right not. I need to mention one game from this year that will forever haunt me. Ever since it's announcement back in 2006, "Aliens: Colonial Marines" has been one of my most anticipated games. This year, it was finally released but it would end up being one of the biggest disappointments ever for me. At least the games of 2013 could only be better going forward and here are the 10 games I personally enjoyed the most.

List items

  • I have loved Super Mario ever since I played Super Mario Bros. on NES back in the early 90's. I honestly can't pick my favourite Mario game. Some days I will say it's SMB3, other days I will pick Super Mario World or Super Mario 64. Although I might not ever pick 3D World it is still one amazing game and definitely worth picking up a Wii U for. So charming, so colorful, so creative and just pure fun. Super Mario will always be the essence of video games for me and Super Mario 3D World just reinforces that.

  • Yeah I know, GTA Online is a mess and some of the missions are boring but that doesn't change the fact that Rockstar delivered one hell of a game. The heists are awesome, and the story is well worth experincing. Yes, Franklin ends up being a bit underdeveloped but I couldn't stop playing to see what would happen next. It's also amazing to see Rockstar pushing the PS3 and 360 like this.

  • If my game of the year was based on how many hours I had put into it, Animal Crossing would be the clear winner. I loved the Gamecube version back in the day but none of the sequels ever managed to grab me the same way. Especially the latest one on Wii, so I was surprised to be addicted to New Leaf. The new gimmick with being the mayor actually works and engages you a lot more in your city. If you have a 3DS, you should at least check it out.

  • I don't know what happened between this game's launch and now. I know the internet is a wierd and mostly negative place but somehow the opinion of this game has changed from "GAME OF THE YEAR, BITCHES!" to "overrated piece of shit, it's a bad shooter!". Yes, this is not a great shooter, but was Bioshock ever a good shooter? This game's hook is it's story and the relationship with Elizabeth. If you want a great shooter, look elsewhere. In the meantime I would recommend everyone else who haven't experinced BioShock Infinite to give it a try.

  • I haven't had much time to play this and maybe it would have ended elsewhere if I had played it through. None the less, this is classic Zelda and I mean that in a good way. It's quite a gamble to make a direct sequel to "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" but somehow Nintendo has managed to get away with it. 2013 has been quite a year for the 3DS and this is an amazing way to end it. Another must play on Nintendo's handheld wonder machine.

  • Another one of the years big surprises to me was Tomb Raider. The last game in the franchise I truly enjoyed was Tomb Raider II on the PlayStation. Crystal Dynamics had done a good job with the series after Core Design almost killed it with Angel of Darkness but I was sceptic after the E3 trailers. It looked like a QTE game but nothing could be further from the truth. TR is a great reboot and an entertaining action game. I really look forward to the next one!

  • I love Naughty Dog and to me, Uncharted 2 is still their best game. At least game play wise. Story wise, The Last of Us is the most amazing thing the studio has given us. Unfortunately I don't like playing it as much as Uncharted. That's more to do with my preferences and dislike of stealth games. At the same time the story is so damn good I want to see what happens. If you try to rush forward you will be punished and killed pretty fast, which is fine but it just didn't really click with me. I will undoubtedly give it another chance and play it like it should be, but for now it ends up being my 7th best game of 2013.

  • Any other year, Rayman Legends would have been the best platformer of the year. Unfortunately Ubisoft choose to release it the same year as a new Mario game so it didn't win that award. That doesn't mean it should be forgotten though as it is an amazing game. Building off of Rayman Origins, Legends is a huge game with an amazing amount of levels. The 2D art is even better than last time and the controls has been improved. If you have the options you should play the game on either the Wii U or the Vita, but even if you don't, you should still give Rayman Legends a try.

  • I truly love the PlayStation Vita. All the complaints I had about the PSP has been fixed and I just love using it. Unfortunately the true Vita gems has been few and far between. Tearaway is one of them. Although it's not a great platformer or a terrible long game it's still an charming and cheerful experience. The artwork is amazing and the ways it uses the Vita hardware is actually fun. If you have a Vita and want to use it as more than just a PS4 accessory, this is the game for it.

  • Look, I love football (or soccer if you will). Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 didn't quite live up to it's promises so once again I've been playing a lot of FIFA instead. I will say this though, it ends up on the list because of the next gen versions. It's the PS4 game I've played the most since launch and the improvements they've made over the last gen versions are just enough to make it feel fresh. A promising start for FIFA on PS4 and Xbox One.
