@onemanarmyy: There are still dungeon crawlers a-la Wizardry like that. Legend of Grimrock. Etryian Odyssey. Vaporum. Labyrinth of Refrain. Conglomerate 451. Class of Heroes. The Dark Spire. Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. Heroes of a Broken Land.
It being a relic of the 90's is it doing it right. They tried to update it with Toejam & Earl 3: Mission to Earth. It sucked.
I agree with you that it is more likely to eventually be canceled than released, but if they do release it, I see them trying to update it to modern trends because the stakes in movies is way different than a Kickstarted indie game and it will also suck.
I decided to try to see if Metal Gear Survive was actually bad or if I just judged the genre shift too harshly the last time that I played it. I put 5 hours into it and I just couldn't care enough to keep going. It's not a great game but also I am so tired of survival crafting games in general that I'm pretty sure I'm never going to play another survival crafting game again. I'm aware that this isn't a good representative of the genre, but it is, however, an encapsulation of how spread thin the genre has become.
I enjoy new IPs, but companies of course hate risk. It's one thing if a game series explores new ideas that are somewhat related to the mechanics of the prior, but I have been very annoyed at games that are clearly unrelated -- with the prior's assets pasted on to try and milk the popularity of the existing franchise, and that annoys me.
NBA 2k16's career mode has stat growth greatly knee-capped to encourage microtransaction purchases and it's disgusting. I wanted to like that game but it was infuriating for that reason.
I've owned Arcanum since launch and I adore the game but it certainly has its flaws. I just wish that the fan patches were updated because they are buggy with the current versions available for purchase. It still has a very unique and engaging setting with game mechanics that were very advanced for their time; building off of the Fallout series (Same head devs).
Each SaGa game is pretty much an experiment and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Unlimited doesn't. Good music, though.
I rented Quest 64 at launch and I remember being very disappointed, as a long time RPG fan with access to better RPGs on Playstation. I haven't played it since and maybe I'll enjoy it more with less expectations.
