Games for Windows Live Missing The Mark

I guess everyone else had their computers destroyed or accounts locked by GFWL or they had to spend ten hours signing up, but I've never had any problems with it. In fact, I like buying games that are connected to Xbox Live, for the achievements and other tracking purposes. Was I the only one disappointed that Mark of the Ninja wouldn't be a game for Windows Live? I'll probably buy it since I've got all the achievements on 360 anyway, but it would've been nice to have them on PC too, since I'm going to be doing them all again.

I was originally going to make this a forum thread, but I thought it was just whiny enough to be a blog post.

Some people say they've never had problems with GFWL, and that's great, but every time I start a new game with GFWL I have to sign into it, then it has to retrieve my profile, then it has to update a few times, then if I'm lucky it will work. For a harrowing experience, try buying GTA4 off of Steam. If you're lucky enough to get a key when you buy it - they seem to run out a lot - you then must take that key to Xbox.com because it's actually a redeem code. You've gotta redeem it there and then download the GFWL client, then sign into it and look in your downloads or owned games or whatever, get that key, then start the game from Steam and put that into the GFWL overlay when it asks for it.

Look, I like the idea of letting me get gamerscore on PC games. That's awesome. Really, it is. And I'll put up with a bit of bullshit if it means I can do that. But stuff like the above? And couple that with the reports of GFWL crashing games and losing and corrupting saves (which has happened to me on different GFWL games)? Yeah, I don't want it. I'll put up with it if I want to play the game in question, but not having it is a big plus for me.

@eccentrix: But why would you buy it on pc if you already played the game enough on 360 to get all the achievements?

I've never had any big problems with GFWL. For me it's been about as faulty as any online service. I don't mind having to use GFWL and other things like it, but if I can get a copy of the game I want without anything like GFWL, Steam, Origin, etc. attached to it, I will choose the DRM free version (even though achievements are kind of cool).

I have also never had a single problem or have been bothered by using GFWL. I certainly think it could use a better look and some more functionality, but I am actually excited to be able to play a game on my PC using my Xbox Live account.

@Swaboo: I like playing the game just for fun. My 360 is on the living room TV and I have a laptop in my bedroom I can attach to a TV, so if someone is using the living room TV, I can still play. Or maybe I just don't want to get out of bed.

If it was on GFWL many people would very likely not have been even able to purchase it.

So i am super super fucking grateful it was not GWFL as it allowed me to buy it and play it.

And others. That game wasn't even profitable on 360 I guess. It deserves to be played and whatever allows it to be more easily bought is the best option. I want to see a sequel.

I understand why people don't like it, it's just annoying that rather than fix the problems people have with it, they decide to not implement a fun/helpful system.

It's not Klei's job to fix it, though. And Microsoft seems okay to keep it the way it is.

@MariachiMacabre: Oh yeah, I fully blame Microsoft. Klei seem to be good people.
