On one hand, I believe that anyone who got into "Gamergate" genuinely out of concern for the state of ethics in gaming journalism needs to take a look at what the wide perception of the movement is, and draw themselves away from it; they need to realize that all they're doing now, for all their good intentions, is adding strength to a hate group. They can argue that it's just a few bad eggs that are distorting the message of the movement, that those few don't speak for all of Gamergate, but those "few" have poisoned the debate to such an extent that no constructive discussion is possible at this point. There will be a time when their objections can be heard by sympathetic ears, and there can be a reasoned debate on the issue, but that's just not going to happen right now.
On the other hand, will there ever be a time when these wretched people who delight in threatening decent people won't be present on the internet? Will there ever be a time when proper dialogue will be possible without these people showing up and twisting words and motives, and burning everything down? What if those waiting to voice their concerns about journalistic ethics in a decent manner will be left waiting forever? Is not the best thing to do then, to push ahead and have the conversation anyway, ignoring the assholes? Man, I don't know.
Thanks for the letter, Jeff. Fuck all the shit that's been happening over the last couple of months.
We need to go back and talk about that 8.8 now.
