When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately attracted comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. It was very different, as senior editor Jess Conditt can attest, since you didn't have to go outside to take part in the mining and building activities. Now, Mattel has added another play dimension to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast of: NFC-enabled toys.

The Boost Mini figures are priced at $5 and will include several characters from Minecraft which include Steve, Alex and creepers, ducks, cows, and ducks. Each figurine is adorable on its own. However, if you put it in contact with an NFC-enabled device, special abilities will be granted within Minecraft Earth for a specified period of. The timer will be displayed on the screen. You'll also get XP for signing up the mini in the game, as an additional incentive to collect all of them (or borrow from friends).
The first batch that will be released this spring includes 20 minis with 10 different abilities to pick from. Mattel also offers an accessory pouch that can be attached to your belt if you're looking to carry your Minecraft Earth game with you on the go.
If you're not into the new game specifically but want to experience the sweet Minecraft toy action Mattel also announced a bunch of brand new $3.50 blind box minis that are themed to the classic Minecraft as well as larger 3.5-inch figures that are tied to the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity is a lot of enjoyable as it's sized in proportion to those toys, standing over six inches tall. The 3.5-inch figurines will cost $10, with the monstrosity selling for $25 when it's released in the fall.
