Games I played in 2016

List items

  • Completed on January 15, did not complete DLC.

I started this game almost immediately after completing Bloodborne during the holidays. At first, I really disliked the feeling of the combat compared to Bloodborne evasion-heavy fast-hitting gameplay. After a few hours, I was able to put myself back in "Dark Souls mode" and actually enjoy the game on its own merit.

That being said, DS2 is my least favorite Souls game and I was really looking forward to finishing it during the last hours. That's why I didn't bother with the DLC, even though I've read it's actually better than the base game.

  • Played for 15 hours in January, did not complete.

To be honest, I bought this game mainly for the box art. I had never played a Mystery Dungeon or an Etrian Odyssey game, but was curious about both franchises.

So, after playing a few hours, I don't think I'm going to finish this one. I had a lot of fun at first, but after a while the combat really gets repetitive and tedious. Also, the side quests were pretty generic.

I'll probably try to play an Etrian Odyssey game this year to see if it's something I'm more into.

  • Completed on January 19.

What a weird game. A strange mix between Resident Evil, an adventure game and a stealth game.

When I understood the stealth mechanics and got the hang of the controls, I really liked the first three fourths of the game. The story was pretty good and the environments were fun to explore. The game goes all supernatural in the last chapter and I really didn't care for that part. It felt super generic and kind of out of place.

That said, if the second game is more like the first few chapters of the original, I look forward to playing it. I still need to track a copy on eBay though ...

  • Completed on January 20.

Not much to say about this one. I wished there would have been more variety in the mission objectives. The best level all had something special for you to do, instead of just reaching a certain score within the time limit.

I thought I would play Ace Combat 5 as my next game, but I've had my fill of flying games for now.

  • Completed on January 21.

As with the latest Mortal Kombat games, the story mode is top quality. The flow between the cinematics and the gameplay made want to play the game non-stop.

The new combat system is a ton of fun and the introduction of level hazards makes fights really look dynamic. The special moves feel great to pull off and the hits sound appropriately powerful.

Looking forward to finally play Mortal Kombat X's story mode later this year.

  • Played for 7 hours in January, did not complete.

I had played the Soul Reaver demo when I was younger and always wondered what the full game would be like. Turns out I don't like it that much.

I lost interest when I couldn't figure out where to go next. I liked some parts of the game (boss fights, puzzles), but I couldn't bring myself to play any more of this.

  • Completed on February 29.

After owning the game for more than 10 years, I finally played it to completion. The game has some pacing problems in its first third, but the story was still interesting enough to keep me going for the 60 hours it took to finish.

The structure of disk 2 is very interesting. Square basically crammed 50 hours of standard gameplay into 10 hours of boss fights, story exposition and three light dungeons. It feels very weird playing through it, but by comparison to other JRPG, I found it refreshing to have the story move along so fast.

  • Completed on March 10.

I was initially intrigued by the game's setting and was pretty excited to play a "realistic" RPG. After playing about 40 hours in the first week of release, I ended up liking the gameplay grind way more than the story (which was very generic).

I am still playing the game, waiting for my friends to catch up to my level. I look forward to retrying the missions at a higher difficulty and fighting rogue agents in the dark zone.
