My First Playstation Purchase

So, because of the recent price drop this gamer has decided to buy a PS3. My history with Playstation is a positive one. I still have a PSone laying about that I had been given. I played many hours of Twisted Metal Black and Metal Gear Solid 2. But I've never purchased a new Playstation console. Nor have I played a PS3 since it became a thing. I do have a 360, and well over one hundred games for that. My Wii has a time and a place. I'm a Steam hoarder.

I bought it because I've always seen lots of videos and coverage for Uncharted, which to me, always looked fantastic. I went to Best Buy and picked up a PS3 160 GB, Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, and the HD God of War Collection (another series I've never played). I couldn't believe the PS3 doesn't come with HD cables at all. That was definitely a bummer. I was aware of it, but I thought they fixed that a long time ago! I unplugged my Roku HD cable so that I could get this thing going.

Once I did, I was both thrilled and irritated. The menus took forever to get through. The amount of actual information those main menus display is a lot more overwhelming then I had expected. But then, I went to the Playstation Store! Not only were there a bunch of great old Playstation games, but it seems like PSN has some awesome exclusives I've never played before. I'm excited to play some of them.

Other then that, I've literally had zero playtime in Uncharted and God of War. Both those games are dated by now, and I wanted to play through the first Uncharted before I hit the second one. I think the voice acting is really fun, and it has some great moments. But it can be incredibly frustrating. I just like how much action it has in comparison to Tomb Raider. There aren't many puzzles and the combat just keeps coming. That can be a lot more fun then room after room of sometimes unseen puzzles that Lara has to tackle in every game. God of War was controller throwing worthy. I got to that part where you move the crate forward, and archers shoot it. Okay, I get that you want me to kick the box. That was irritating as hell. I just had to turn it off.

I'm rambling for the fun of it, and I'm really excited to play more games down the line. I'm not the biggest fan of that controller, having used a 360 since launch now. I think it fits some games better than others. But I'm hoping to get MGS4, Uncharted 3 of course, and maybe Motorstorm. It should be interesting. The fact that I'm not really impressed by everything shows how much wear and tear I've taken on the current gen consoles. At this point I'm getting fun exclusives and mainly buying for the 360 and PC. But I also get the appeal of the PS3 for all the crazy it has done. The Blu-Ray, the Japanese craziness, and the massive storage.

In some ways, I feel like the Playstation brand hasn't changed since I left it. The games are mostly fun, sometimes frustrating, and the whole package isn't as intuitive as the 360 dashboard or guide bar. Yet, the library just feels different. They bring so much to the table.

If you have any great titles to recommend to a true n00b, feel free to reply! Anything but Gran Turismo is fine with me. ;)

Since you're getting frustrated all the time and want actiony action, I would recommend.. Hmm, I really have nothing. IMO Playstation titles, while great, all rely heavily on frustration. You gotta be frustration-tolerant to enjoy PS3 games, IMO.

I dunno, Metal Gear Solid 4 i guess.

Man, I can't disagree with you more. That's one of the things that bummed me out with Uncharted; just how action-focused it was, even though it had great characters, voice acting and a superb overall production. I guess I'm romanticizing the past, when games weren't all about shooting dudes in the face, but I've enjoyed every single Tomb Raider game more than I enjoyed Uncharted. Granted, I enjoy exploring and solving puzzles. Still, I haven't played Uncharted 2 yet - and it seems to be a little bit better.

To answer your plea for games; LBP, MGS4, GoW3, KZ2, Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, Infamous, and Valkyria Chronicles are some exclusives you might want to take a look at. And the remake/port-collections happening everywhere, with Prince of Persia, Team Ico, GoW, and so forth.

Question: Did you get Uncharted and Uncharted 2 separately? You know they are releasing a dual pack with both of them and a bunch of dlc for $40. As for recommendations I would say Heavy Rain, that game is incredible.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a pretty cool PS3 only game if you like olde school Zelda games and games that poke fun at games.

I'm a huge 360 fan, but for the previous generation I owned both Playstation 2 and Xbox. I'm kind of interested in buying a PS3 with a few games interesting me such as InFamous. But my Xbox 360 finally died after 6 years so I'm buying a Slim tomorrow and kind of tempted to get a PS3. Any reasons why I should change my mind?

Anyway, games to get are

..to say something that hasn't been said yet, i'll go with Disgaea 3! even if you're not into RPGs, it's a lot of fun and i, someone who never plays RPGs, managed to get into it pretty quickly. it has great humor, a pretty silly (in a good way) story with great characters and you can easily lose hours and hours playing it. the battle system is also neat with completely insane damage numbers and pretty entertaining, elaborate attacks. you could totally find it for cheap now....or you could just get Disgaea 4 that comes out tomorrow. i didn't finish Disgaea 3 yet BUT I'M STILL SO EXCITED.  i really recommend it!

hmm, what else.. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 + 2 are pretty good games, though go with Sigma 2 if difficult games aren't your thing. it's much easier of the two, it's lightening fast, and it's pretty exciting. it's one of my favorite PS3 games.

You must be really easily frustrated.  That part with the block and the archers isn't even out of the prologue.  Just wait until you get to Hades.

I definitely agree with the recommendation for Heavy Rain, but you really need to know going in that it isn't quite like any other game that you've played. Really awesome experience though.

As someone who recently was suckered into playing Valkyria Chronicles, please look very seriously into it before actually buying it, because I think a whole lot of the hype surrounding that game is bullshit and the game is far, far from perfect.

The term "Steam hoarder" is my favourite thing about this thread--despite it's irrelevancy to the topic. Such a perfect term.

Excuse me while I marinate in this delicious term.

On topic: highly recommend picking up LBP1/2 for excellent couch-co-op-goodness.

Haha, that honestly is my experience with PS3 games. I always feel that the games don't have actual difficulty that require skill, their difficulty consists of multiple elements of frustrations, either in gameplay or controls, which you overcome by learning to endure them and memorize their patterns.

Hey fair enough. I definitely was looking for something with more action because I played through Anniversary and Legend, which are great games but can sometimes sway the other direction.

I think without question I will get MGS4 as soon as I can. That's one I wish I hadn't missed out on. Demon's Souls seems pretty great too. I like my games hard!

I don't think I'm easily frustrated. I'll keep trying at it. It was just enough to get me irritated I guess.

Oh man, the God Of War series will blast your fucking brain through your eye sockets. I had to sign up to this website cause I NEEDED to tell you that. I played the the 1st and 2nd one when I couldn't get a hold of my P3 and they were in the bargain bin, and I thought they were so incredibly well done for P2 games. I couldn't wait to play the 3rd one. I honestly kept telling myself, how much better can it be? And my unbelievable expectations were shattered. And yes, you do need to play it on HD, it's beautiful.

As for the others: Uncharted 2 I heard was a lot better than then 1st one. I wouldn't know how much better it is, but it IS amazing.
Demons Souls is another great exclusive, although tempers will flare. Consequentially, it is extremely rewarding.
Heavy Rain, no explanation needed.

I don't know much about other exclusives like Resistance or Infamous. I played some of Resistance and it didn't really get me excited, it seemed pretty generic. I've never really given Infamous a fair shot, although I have it downloaded and ready to go.

And even though this last Final Fantasy sucked, Final Fantasy Versus XII is gonna be exclusive and It seems like they're taking it in a different direction, which sounds promising. Good buy though guy, I love my P3, and there's gonna be some great games to look forward to.

@Godzilla_Sushi: Yeah, Demon's Souls is easily one of the best games for the PS3. It's actually probably one of my favorite games of all time. But, I recommend you to ogle the wiki (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/) whilst playing. That's one of the problems with the game; it doesn't hold your hand in any way, shape or form. Most things you'll have to figure out for yourself, and that can be quite annoying, or even fruitless. So, I do recommend visiting the wiki once in a while if you plan on playing the game.

Heavy Rain is the greatest game I've ever played, and I've been playing for 15 years.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is up there, as well. Same old recommendations as usual.

Get your ass in gear and prepare for Uncharted 3, it'll certainly blow us all away.

Cool PS3 bro.
