A Long Time Coming: 200,000 Wiki Points

It's approaching six years since Giant Bomb's wiki opened for business, which is crazy to think about. It certainly doesn't feel like it's been that long, but here we are. The wiki has definitely had its ups and downs over that time, what with glitches, vandals, plagiarizers, spirited debates and ludicrous arguments over what is and isn't suitable wiki material. But it's morphed from the old days of the wild west of wikis into something that's more or less come into its own, even if I feel that the site's staff doesn't necessarily give it the attention it deserves.

But with that in mind, I hit a personal wiki milestone tonight. With my most recent submission to the page for Lightning, I have accrued over 200,000 wiki points. There are some duders out there with significantly more points than that. (Seriously, holy shit, @marino!) It may also be a value that's somewhat inaccurate, what with the various wiki glitches I alluded to above. But still, that's a lot of wiki points, even today. So I figured that I might as well look back on what have been my biggest contributions to date:

Looking Back at 200K: My Biggest Wiki Contributions as of 5/2/2014

1. Metroid: Other M3082 Points. Yes, this game gets a lot of hate. Yes, it has problems. But even as the years have passed, my contributions to this page remain the greatest in terms of wiki point calculation formulas over which I have no control.
2. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII2914 Points. As was the case with Other M, my work on the page for Lightning Returns was motivated entirely out of both my interest in it prior to release and my enjoyment of it post release. This game is fantastic and I can't gush enough about it.
3. Fire Emblem2187 Points. Ah, Fire Emblem. This was a page that was in dire need of some work, and I gave it the work. Honestly, it could probably use a little more work. I forgot to include any sort of description about the Knight class. Whoops.
4. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance1713 Points. Speaking of Fire Emblem, most of my work on the Path of Radiance page came during the era of Giant Bomb when point bounties were offered for completing wiki tasks overseen by the staff and moderators. In this particular case, the task was to rewrite a hefty chunk of the page that had been previously plagiarized from elsewhere. (Are we getting wiki tasks back any time soon? Yes? No? Maybe?)
5. Kid Icarus: Uprising1507 Points: My work on Kid Icarus: Uprising came mostly around the game's release, particularly while I was busy also adding and editing various pages related to it. Actually, this page could use some more work, as the story is surprisingly deep and touching for something that starts off so goofy and referential to the original NES game.
6. Samurai Warriors 31496 Points. As much of a Warriors fan as I am, this particular game has gotten more wiki love from me than any other. A lot of that has to do with how unique it is in a number of ways, not the least of which being the crazy mode based on an old Japan-exclusive Famicom title.
7. The Last Story1248 Points. The Last Story is arguably the weakest of the three games that Operation Rainfall campaigned for Nintendo to release in North America, but it was worth it to me.
8. Trauma Team1227 Points. Trauma Team's page is one that I did a lot of work on, but I feel I could have done a lot more. The crazy mix of gameplay styles, along with the story and characters, presents a lot of ground to cover that couldn't just be easily summarized as another Trauma Center game.
9. Crossover1074 Points. OK, my history with this page is kind of odd. Back in the day, I was the one that made the submission for the page's creation. I had also written a fair-sized article for it. And then one day, a WM staff member PMed me to say that he had accidentally wiped the page and asked if I could rewrite it, as he had apparently intended to use it as an example in a business presentation. Or something along those lines. My memories of that are foggy at this point. But I rewrote the page, and I got a nice little wiki point bonus tacked on for my efforts.
10. Labrys1045 Points. And at #10, we have Unit #031 herself, Labrys. I ended up writing a lot about her just because she is easily the best part of Persona 4 Arena's story mode.

It's been a wild ride getting to 200,000. Who knows what this list will look like at 300,000?

What are some of your largest, proudest, and weirdest wiki contributions?

Awesome job and congrats! I've enjoyed reading through some of those pages for games that I just can't dedicate that much time to. It is always nice to see others dedicated to trying to make this wiki the go to wiki for games.

I think you recently became the number 3 or 4 person with the most wiki points as well!

Hmm, you should give Japanese games a shot. Clearly you play very few of them. Also, congratulations. That's 200,000 more wiki points than I have.

I'd really love to contribute more than I have to the wiki (which is virtually nothing), but I'm just never in the mood, nor do I really know what to add. It's absolutely crazy to me that you have 200,000 points. That's awesome! To 300,000! :P

Also I dunno if I'd call LR fantastic.

Holy crap that's a lot of of points. I don't want to even know how many hours that takes.

What amazes and impresses me the most is not just quantity of edits you make but the quality of them as well. Pages like the Other M page, are amazingly complete.

I'm not very active in the wiki lately due to time and lack of motivation, but when I was I tried to fill the lesser thought of aspects than game pages. Like Character or Location Pages, or defunct developers etc.

Thanks! It's strange that I'm in the top few in terms of points accumulated. I'd have thought that more people would have more points by now. Anyway, you've done a lot of great work in the wiki as well, and I'm looking forward to more of your weekly reports.

Sarcasm detected. But thank you!

Hey, there's no shame in that. I actually wrote a 100,000 point blog back in the day. That was...a while ago. But seriously, it'll be fun to read it once you're ready to post it.

Thanks! As for adding content, it's really just a matter of writing about things you're interested in, whether it be a game, a character, concept, no matter how popular or esoteric the subject might be. Maybe you'll find yourself in the mood when the inspiration is there. :)

I would! I have!

I once had earned points on more pages than any other human user. I've probably lost that position since then.

@slag: Characters, locations, and developers could certainly use some love if you are willing to dive in. I always want to start working on those pages, but I seem to find an endless amount of empty game pages still.

Congrats! You have a lot more patience for this than I do, that's for sure. The only thing I've contributed is some info about Traitor's Gate, a really terrible late-90s/early 2000s PC adventure game that I only filled out because I knew NO ONE ELSE had ever played it.

And like bobafettjm said, characters, locations, and developers could always use more love. There are a lot of pages in the wiki that don't have much detail to go with them, so anything you can add would definitely be a step forward.

Kudos, duder (Kududers?). That must've taken a long while. I've only just passed 100k myself, so I don't see myself catching up to you any time soon.

I appreciate the focus on some big Japanese games of recent years. I know you've been aggrieved in the past because of Giant Bomb's general dismissive tone for recent games from the land of the rising sun, but it's awesome that we have a lot of community members who care enough about them to counterbalance the staff's apathy with blogs and in-depth wiki pages. In a sense, it's where I feel the community (the content creator part of it anyway) shines brightest: making up for the deficit in coverage for games that such a small staff of editors inevitably allow to fall by the wayside.

Congrats man! I haven't contributed to the wiki much in recent years, but somehow I felt the need to write the Might and Magic X page one day because I figured no one else would, and that sucker contributes around a fourth of my wiki points. You? You've put some time in, and I'm going to guess most of those points aren't from uploading "racy but not explicit" fan-art into the wiki back before that loophole was closed.

Biggest Contribution - Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge

Weirdest Page - A toss up between the weird amount of time I put into the Marbus page and of course Sexy Beach Zero.

Hey, someone's got to fill out those Illusion pages!

Nice work. I always tried to get into wiki edits but i'm not very good at writing. Keep up the work.

Thanks. And like bobafettjm said, any little contribution you make can help. Even if it's as small as just correcting the occasional typo you come across.

hmm...

Yeah, it might be a while. :P

Thanks! And from what I've seen, your work has been pretty consistent and informative. And you definitely fill in for a lot of gaps in my own knowledge. I've never been down the rabbit hole that is the TurboGrafx-16, for example, so from my perspective, it's great to see when these sorts of things do get attention in the wiki. It does sting a bit in that the games I tend to like (or even pay more attention to) are generally dismissed or ignored by the staff, and there's not much I can do about that, but giving these games attention in the wiki and helping out that way is, I think, beneficial in its own right.

It makes my 5,000 and change seem TINY! Good work!

Thanks!

Oh, man, I remember those days. That was a loophole I never did abuse, and it didn't surprise me when the engineers closed it with prejudice. (Though it's kind of what they should have expected for assigning point values to image uploads in the first place.) Also, that looks like some fine work you've done on the Might and Magic X page!

You monster!

Sorry!

Yeah, the point system has undergone a lot of revision over the years. There's not much point in trying to keep track of how much a particular submission is worth because the value of that submission now isn't what it would have been six years ago.

@hailinel: Hey, you're welcome. I should really do more TurboGrafx-16 stuff (I suspect Octurbo might make its return this year). That console is mostly a punchline for most US gamers these days, along with that wave of crappy pre-PS1 CD-ROM consoles of the early 90s, but I find it fascinating. That's partly due to Dr. Sparkle's highly informative Chronturbo series of videos, a spin-off of what he's doing for the NES. I've been familiar with the SNES and Genesis for years, but as a European I had almost no prior knowledge of NEC's console beyond its goofy name.

It would've been a far wiser idea to make the TG-16 the target of this "ensure every game has a full page" project I'm on, rather than the SNES. One of those consoles has considerably fewer games to worry about than the other, let's just say.

@mento: The TurboGrafx or a PC-Engine system is the next one I am on the hunt for. I have wanted one of those since they were new and only ever had one friend who owned it. But being in the area I am sometimes it is hard to come across stuff like that. Although last year I did score a CD-i at a garage sale for $2 since they thought it was a CD player. I also today picked up an amazing XaviX Port.

@bobafettjm: A CD-i for two bucks? Have any games for it?

@mento: My only exposure to the the system was back in college. During my junior year, I roomed with three other guys, and together we amassed a pretty heavy collection of consoles. Among them was a TurboDuo (a combination of TG-16 and the CD-ROM accessory), but we honestly didn't use it very much. It probably didn't help that was also the year when the PS2 and GameCube were new and shiny. I actually wish we had spent more time with it.

I said it elsewhere and I'll say it here, makes me feel like a slacker. Also I have no idea (some idea) how I have nearly 10k points on UMvC3 alone, with MvC3 and UMvC3 comprising more than half of my total 30k in wiki edits.

Oh and apparently I have 1337 points in WoW?

I'm not sure I want to ruin that.
