@nightriff: I grew pretty weary of the BGWTB's sound pretty quickly and rarely find myself revisiting it with the sole exception being the track 'When the Sun Rose Again'. With Dinosaurs however, I've been listening to the album from top-to-bottom ever since I got my mitts on it, I don't know why but there's a sense of familiarity within this record that was missing from the last one; well that and the vastly improved sound.

Mama - 3.5/5

Good (and effectively scary) film but felt mighty rushed, especially in getting to the ending. Also points deducted for the criminal under-utilization of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

@pollysmps: ...and here I was complaining that King Animal's volume level was far too low for me to appreciate. Dude, you really opened my eyes (ears?) with this, I shall have to rethink my entire stance on how to gauge a record's sound!

@pollysmps: Christ! That's like a valley of difference! I shall have to hunt down a few vinyls of my favorite records to gauge the difference myself. Thanks for that man!

@pollysmps: Have you listened to the new Soundgarden album 'King Animal' by the way? It's rather similar in how the production for it sounds much cleaner than, the also intentionally muddled and rawer sounding, 'Down on the Upside'. Not complaining though, it's a fantastic record but my mind keeps coming back to the whole "clean sound" trend.

@sickman87: Agreed on letting William try his pipes more, he really comes into his own on the track 'Hung on a Hook'.

@pollysmps: I won't argue with your observations but after trying oh so hard to get into their last album, and being repelled by the over-preened sound and overt "Mark Tremonti" guitar distortion, the production for 'Dinosaurs' feels comparably understated and nuanced. I just spent the last few hours abusing the speakers in my living room sound system (not really built for music, admittedly) playing the album and I'm still convinced that it sounds leaps and bounds better than 'Black Gives Way to Blue', which may be just enough for me to appreciate the record.

However, in comparison to their Layne-days, the album falls short (at least production-wise) considerably. I was actually hoping they'd carry on with the muddled sound of their self-titled album (which is my favorite Alice record...don't hurt me!) ever since they reunited back in '05 and I still want them to go back to that sound, but for now I'm more than happy with how this album sounds.

An audio engineer? Damn! You must have quite the critical ear for music then.

@pollysmps: That is the most apt comparison I've yet heard yet!

@zella: Can't argue with that man. Yeah they lost some of the edge now that Layne is no more, but I can't help shake the feeling that this would've been the record that the band would've made had he survived and continued alongside them.
