Games that would be improved with the inclusion of the Star Trek battle music

The theme that punctuates the epic fight scene between Kirk and Spock in Star Trek: TOS episode Amok Time is perhaps one of the greatest orchestral compositions of our generation. Now I know that some of you might be wondering what in the hell I'm talking about. Let me begin by first saying I'm not mad at you, just disappointed. With that out of the way, I present to you the fight scene in question:

As completely enthralling, tense and totally not cheesy as the choreography and cinematography is, this scene wouldn't be half of what it is without that song. The song feels like a B-side to The Rite of Spring, punctuated by shrill, discordant tones played ad nauseum , and I use that term literally since the whole thing is obscenely unsettling. In fact, probably the only thing worse than how unsettling the song is, is how ludicrously catchy it is. Oftentimes I catch myself playing a game and getting flashbacks to this scene, and invariably wind up singing the hook to myself as I wreck digital fools. So take note, publishers and developers of the following games: if you want to markedly improve your title, license this goddamn song and play it during every battle.

List items

  • A game about a burly half-naked man swinging blades around to kill monsters and freaks? Try and tell me that David Jaffe didn't come up with the game after bingeing on Star Trek fight scenes, then made his anti-hero angrier and more violent to avoid getting sued by Gene Rodenberry's estate, because you're obviously lying. And as great as a choir of contraltos chanting Kratos' name over and over again as well as some other stuff that sounds all Greek to me (pun intended), I'll take menacing wind instruments any day of the week.

  • Truly, this is the only song ever composed that can fully convey the fury and terror of a vicious battle mode standoff in Donut. The flames of hell lighting the arena and filling the deadly center; bomb cars, remnants of murdered enemies, speeding around the arena seeking to cause your demise; red shells, banana peels and fake item boxes all over the place... sorry, I think my PTSD kicked in for a second there.

  • To get to the heart of the issue, we must really break down the content of the scene in question: Kirk and Spock, two allies and former best friends - brothers from other mothers, if you will - are fighting to the death on a desolate planet at the end of the universe. Call me crazy, but the first thing that comes to mind when breaking it down is Solid Snake fist-fighting his arch-nemesis and brother (who was posing as an old friend of his on the Codec) on top of the burning wreckage of Metal Gear REX, somewhere in the middle of the frozen tundra of desolate Alaska. The fact that I find the idea of yelling "BROTHAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" in my really bad Liquid Snake voice while listening to this song to be really funny might also have something to do with why I'm including this.
