Top 10 of 2010

My best of 2010 so far based on playing 35 games so far this year and completing 25 titles.  (updated 10/13/10)  Halo Reach and God of War 3 both just miss the final spots on this list.  I enjoyed both of these games, but in both cases they felt simply like uninspired graphical upgrades to older, better games.  Maybe I'm just tired of the gameplay formula in both which neither of these games really advance.

Also notably missing are Mass effect 2 and Starcraft 2, neither of which I've played.  With the former, I'm holding off until I can bring myself to slog through the original first.  The second I haven't been able to play because it won't run on my hardware and as my interest is only in the single player, I'm not going to rush to upgrade in order to play it.

List items

  • While not yet quite as good as Civilization IV was after its two expansions, this is still an excellent game and in my opinion better than vanilla Civ IV. Sadly, I'm below even minimum specs, so in order to get it to run I have to turn pretty much everything to low or off.

  • While recycling most of the art of the original SMG, this game surpasses it in level design and variety. Level selection has been streamlined and the kid friendly second seat has expanded capabilities. This will likely stand as the pinnacle of 3D Mario for some time to come. I honestly can't imagine where they could go next.

  • Take a compelling story and atmosphere and combine it with Remedy's polished shooter action and you have one of the better titles of the year. Ignore the thermos search unless you are on a second playthrough; don't ruin the flow of your first playthrough of the game for a couple of achievement points

  • Interesting story based game that overcomes generally ho-hum gameplay with an interesting story and a few tense moments of action. The branching choose your own adventure through your actions storytelling of this game is something I would love to see done in other games. (preferably ones with a better voice case and more consistently written story) Kudos to Sony for publishing something different.

  • Taking the structure of a 3D Zelda like adventure, this story of War's quest to prove his innocence fires on all cylinders. The game replaced the ho-hum combat of typical Zelda with a more action oriented system.

  • More interesting than the typical GTA simply because of its setting, this is an excellent entry in the relatively barren landscape of western games. It would likely rate higher for me if it strayed a bit more from the tired GTA structure of nested missions for repugnant, unlikeable characters. Let me choose if I want to help scumbags.

  • Raven has a way of making shooters that simply "feel" right. However, this game surprised me with how much I actually enjoyed the sci-fi story. Told through gameplay and audio recordings in a manner very reminiscent of Bioshock, it was definitely worth reloading to see the other endings.

  • Old school retro clone of 2D Zelda with an interesting art style and a number of inside jokes for longtime game fans.

  • Although I am only part way through, I am really enjoying this action game even though it is a bit rough around the edges. Like the next title on this list, it has so far proven a disappointment compared to others in its franchise due to a lack of exploration. However, because of its more ambitious scope I'm nudging it just above Metroid: Other M, at least for now.

  • Like Castlevania, I found Metroid: Other M disappointing as a representative of its franchise, but ultimately found it to be a fairly satisfying action game. It may not have been the game I wanted out of a new consoled metroid, but it was still a solid character action title. Held back by an unnecessarily weak control scheme and poor voice acting/translation I still enjoyed this attempt to bring more story to Metroid.
