Would you like it if all games had RPG elements in them?

I mean, people obviously like RPGs, look how well Bioware is doing, or Blizzard even.  Today so many shooters and even racing games have you earning experience and gaining levels.  Also look at achievements, that's like experience points for playing games, and that concept has been very successful.  I gotta admit, I love all that stuff.  I also like it when games go a step further and have you finding or unlocking gear and offering ways to customize your character.  Is anyone opposed to the recent popularity of all this, or maybe you don't find the level grind appealing?  What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Yeah, I think it's great that characters, cars, guns, whatever gain levels and advance through the players actions.  I think it should push actual role-playing games to come up with new and creative ways to differentiate their games from just any game that has upgrade mechanics or player progression.

I like the customization aspect of a game that RPG elements bring, so yes.

More freedom of control can be a good thing, but sometimes you just want to shoot things in the face. Simple and without complications. You know what I mean? A little of that good old mom and pop, meat and potatoes, missionary position shooting people in the face. Though I can think of more than a few games that could use some RPG like progression, but like anything else certain types of mechanics get boring if used too often.

I enjoy it, but i am also a RPG nut playing everything from pen and paper to fallout 3 and mass effect 2, so i may be a bit biased.

That said the more customization and options the better, being able to adapt my in game avatar to reflect my playstyle or choosing how i want to further the story both a big pluses in my book. the more rpg like, the better.

I agree.  You want a game to grow in a way that mirrors the effort you put in it, not just unlocking stuff.  I for one want to see a Mario tennis and Golf game on the Wii that has the RPG element that the GBA games had as well as fun courses and characters.

I wouldn't like if all games had all features RPGs have, but I would like if they had dialogue choices and player customization and stuff.

Good point.  Maybe Mass Effect 2 was sort of doing that by letting you import a save, essentially connecting the progression of a character and the story across two games.

Just as long as it doesn't turn everything into full-on RPGs. I'm not interested in those. A few RPG elements here and there though can be appealing.

I love RPG games, but i think if all games were the same i'll be bored. I think it wouldn't suit a game like Call of Duty or Gears of War at all... YEah it kinda worked for Borderlands... But that still weird for me, haven't been able to even digest going thru the game let alone try to believe that is an RPG shooter.

I think really everything depends on the game... Yes i would say that i love the RPG puzzles better than missions on CoD who doesn't CoD single player DROVE ME BONKERS!! but in some respect all the games have a level of things that appeals to most people...

Besides they cant add RPG things to all games as well, not everyone likes RPG's.

<3 FF <3 Valkyrie Profile <3 Xenogears <3 Titan Quest :) also love many many more! :D

nah. it'd get annoying to have to level up in every game i play. though most games on my pc right now have a levelling system (borderlands, dragon age origins, mount and blade, force unleashed, web of shadows, trine, and league of legends) the one i play the most, doesn't (left 4 dead 2). and i don't think i'd like l4d2 as much with a levelling system.

not if it was just gonna be xp and leveling, and not any real meaningful ways to progress your character from rpgs, just watch the bars fill up and the numbers get bigger.

i think bioshock is a good recent example of how to do it right, there's not even experience or levels, but it's got good rpg elements and it's immersive.

I like it sometimes, but I don't like RPG elements tacked onto every other game as they are now. Sometimes I want to play a consistent, focused shooter where I don't have to worry about my characters "accuracy rating". Sometimes a platformer is just a platformer, and so on.

RPGs are by far my favorite games.  Not all games should have RPG elements though, take for example CoD, if RPG elements were added to Call of Duty's campaign, I think it would do more harm than good.  That's a game I just want to run in and shoot some dudes in the face in.  I wouldn't want to have to spend 10 or 15 minutes looking at a screen trying to decide if I wanted to upgrade sniper rifles or assault rifles.

I would like to see more RPG elements in golf games. Tiger Woods pretends to do this, but it's pretty shallow. You usually just have to grind it out until your stats are 100% not counting bonuses. After that, I quit playing offline altogether and take it online only. A better story mode (RPG like) during your career would keep me interested in the offline portion longer.

from an art standpoint, I think it would eliminate alot of the vision they need to do certain things.
While I also love RPG elements, it's not needed in all games...t extra development in giving us more freedom once a game is completed, would be a great way to see what more gamers want. (customization of appearance, ability, etc) remember when games had codes? Where's all the fun crazy stuff these days?

As someone who likes RPGs above pretty much every other game genre, I'd say yes, but it's a tentative yes. Some games don't need the extra hook to do well. I can't think of how Half-Life 2 would be improved if you had a crowbar tech-tree or whatever. I guess it kind of depends on what you judge to be RPG mechanics. You can buy upgrades and personalise your character in games like Assassin's Creed and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, but neither really strike me as being RPG-like.

I think one game that always gets overlooked for how well it integrates RPG mechanics into a game that doesn't usually have them is Soulcalibur IV. That game allowed you to customise to your hearts desire, but also had the extra hook of stat-related gear. You could still play the pure vanilla fighting experience, but this was a wonderful addition, and I'm constantly disappointed by fighting games that don't do this. I would have loved to have seen it in Tekken 6, but that was really half-assed.

No, but hybrid games -- games that combine two or more genres of games -- are much better than games that stick to their own genre.

We're about there already, but no, I don't want to have the option to grind myself out of a challenge for every kind of game. And I wouldn't want every game to insist on added mindnumbing mailman quests and other bullshit just to last the expected length of an RPG.
