JohngPR: Best of 2011

  • This is one of the few games that just got better as it went along. The last two hours were fucking great, and that ending! In just a few short years, Rocksteady has become one of my favorite developers.

  • Genuinely funny writing, a great story, and an even better ending makes this one of my favorite games this year. The puzzles aren't half bad either!

  • This is the sleeper hit of the year. I've never even played a Saints Row game before but couldn't resist this game's self aware humor, set pieces, and straight up entertaining gameplay. This is the most straight up fun I had with a game all year.

  • They finally told a story that made you care about these characters. Sure it took them three tries, but Gears of War 3 really surprised me. Kudos to Epic for making me actually care about these dude bros.

  • Thought by some to be a downgrade from Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3 still has some of the best graphics and set pieces than any other game in 2011.

  • Skyward Sword is pretty damn amazing. Intricate level design, beautiful art direction, and good motion controls gives the series a fresh feel.

  • This is a throwback in the best possible way. It's challenging, cheery, and straight up beautiful to look at. Love that soundtrack too!

  • This game caught me by surprise. A little bit Deus Ex 1, a lot of bit Metal Gear Solid, I had a great time overall with the game. DXHR beat out The Witcher 2 because TW2 somehow managed to have worse boss fights than Human Revolution.

  • Here's proof that you don't have to do the same generic stuff with the fantasy genre. TW2 delivers a great story in a game that you'll have to play twice to get everything out of it. Great stuff!

  • Giving Isaac a voice was the right decision for this series in my opinion. It helped me sympathize with Isaac and made for a better overall story. The game's action, tension, and awesome setpieces certainly helped its cause as well.
