My childhood, my innocence; where art thou? (Blog post) (>'.')>

So I've been feeling a little down lately, mostly because the realization has started to kick in that 1.) I'm 18, no longer a 'minor' and 2.) I'm out of high school.

Now, I wouldn't mind it so much, but I feel as though this has all happened much too fast. I feel as though I have missed out on a lot of things, some of which are too late to go back for. I don't feel 'young' anymore, and have began to notice myself age.

I remember eagerly anticipating the day I would finally finish high school, when I would be on my own, responsible for my own well being; now that that dream has become a reality, however, it is not as appealing as I once hoped it would be.

I know, unfortunately, that I will probably never see many of my fellow colleagues again, some that I had known for nearly half my life. Many of them have changed though, becoming into something I never knew they could succumb to. Worst of all I knew I could have prevented it, saved them even, but that is another story for a different day.

It is a little scary and exciting at the same time, really. The thought of being 'grown-up' may seem overwhelming, but that is to be expected; you have spent your entire life up to this point as a dependent learner, absorbing vital information in order to function in this dog-eat-dog world. I should be thankful for having such good memories of my earlier life, but what good is living in the past? None, I don't think.

And as if things couldn't get any more 'real', Garfield has made me self-aware of my own sick, tainted mind:

It sure is, you perverted f*ck.
It sure is, you perverted f*ck.
Anyone experience this "phase" in their life yet?

# And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death#

Yup. Happened to me when I moved out. Most of my close friends moved to the east coast for school, I was going to college knowing absolutely nobody, and for the first time, I was in complete control. I was fucking lost. I wanted to be a kid again (I still do!) and go back to a more simple time where my major concern was homework. It is a rough time....looking at your self objectively usually is tough.

You will be fine, and grow stronger because of it. I can tell you have a good head on your shoulders.

Yeah I understand 100%. This is natural at your age. The fact that you have so much anxiety about growing out of childhood means you really care about where your life is going. If you care enough to stress about it can only mean you will work hard enough so you can find your way in life. The people who never make it in life are the ones who don't give a fuck and just act like tomorrow is another day to party.

It may take some time, but trust me, as long as you keep trying you can make it. Also, you are in what I call a life adjustment cycle. I'm about to begin one as I'm going to be 30 in less than 10 months time. I can still run 5km in less than 24 minutes, so I still got it.

Cool, thanks for the words of wisdom. I'm in the same you were in about "heading to college not knowing anybody," kind of sucks, haha, but it can only get better, right?

@Jolly_Lolly: Yeah the one thing you realize when as you age is youthfulness is something you only get so much of. You have to take advantage of that while you can. I find that the longer I stay active, the longer I feel youthful. Also growing up doesnt have to be a total formal affair. I still buy comics, play video games, hang out wtih my buds. But I also have a mortgage, a steady job and I'm married. Our generation is lucky in that we can define our own concept of adulthood within a frame work of responsibility.

I wasn't innocent as a child, turning 18 just meant I had more fun. Boy did I.

I'm about to be in your position as I'm in my final year of school so I can totally understand where you're coming from. I'm already starting to get depressed about leaving the safety net of school and my friends but every time I start worrying, I just think of a quote my Dad told me once :

"Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional."

Just 'coz you've finished school doesn't mean opportunities to learn and experience have stopped. No ever really stops learning or making friends. You can only regret old, lost friends but you can laugh and make new found friends. Chin up !

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say

When she joins in? That brings up the question, "Why is sex not an option at that point?" And I've been married for hundreds of years, and I stopped about 90 years ago. I've found other alternatives, like hypersex.

Being 18 ain't so bad. Everyone still treats you like a kid, but you can buy alcohol legally to numb the pain.

Is Time not the song about everyone's life or what?

Oh, and just learn to get through it. I felt the same way 2 years ago when I turned 18, but you know there's tons of new memories to make and there's billions of people that you can befriend.

It sounds like you need to get some enlightenment. I suggest you take a gram of mushroom tea and see if you come to any new realizations. Don't forget to record a video blog sometime during your experiment. = )

I know exactly how you feel man, I'm 18 now and things just feel like I should still be 15 and I want to go back to that age and just hang out with my friends, but I guess it comes a time when you have to actually except that things will be different, no matter how much they suck.

As much as I wish I could completely deny all of these thoughts and say I'm completely different, totally there right now.
Being in-between arguing divorced parents and me being the most mature one in this situation annoying too but I've tried to do one thing:
Keep at least a few friends close, and hang out with them as much as often.
 Good luck though buhruhthuhr.

So what you miss from being younger is hanging out with friends?  Is that it?  What exactly have you missed out on?

I know the feeling. I graduated in May and I turn 18 in October. I started college this week and I feel completely dependent and able to do my own thing now. I like the feeling though. I also already have made new friends at college so I don't feel as bad about losing some (not all) of my friends I made in high school.

Ha! I'm hitting twenty soon and I just got into college. How do you think I feel?! I'm two years closer to the grave then you'll ever be!

On a side note, yeah I know what you mean. Being a three old again would be so much fun. Summers went on for eternity and shitting in your bed was perfectly acceptable...
