Best of 2009

Before we get started, I think the reader should understand two things:

1) I only added games I actually managed to play in 2009. There's a lot of stuff I probably won't get to until next year like Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2.
2) This list is formed and organized upon my opinions regarding what I considered to be my FAVORITE games of 2009, not necessarily which games I think are the best made. I would, for example, say all the games on the list are probably greater than or equal to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite but I didn't enjoy them all more.

I will try to play more of 09's games before the deadline for this list is upon us. I JUST got Killzone 2 today and I'll probably get ahold of some other awesome games for Christmas and whatnot.

List items

  • There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. Naughty Dog nailed literally every part of this game. If you break a game down into individual parts (gameplay, graphics, voice work, soundtrack, replay value, things like that) it's impossible not to rank Uncharted 2 amongst the top 5 games of all time in every single category. Add to that the things it does incredibly well that you don't see often in games. It has hilarious writing. It doesn't have load times in the single player. It doesn't take shortcuts with the mythological parts of the storyline. In closing, this is simply one of the best-crafted gaming experiences to have ever existed on this planet and there's not a single other game this year that is even almost as good.

  • It's hard to say why this game is so great. There's a whole lot going on and all of it is good. Batman is used better as a character here than he ever was in games or film.

  • I'm a bit short on time and I just recently got the game, but boy, is this game great. It's one of the few games that has ever made me notice the developers spent exactly the amount of time they needed on the game.

  • inFamous is a strong game in a number of ways but the driving force here is the story. I would recommend inFamous for its mind-blowing ending alone.

  • MHFU is one of the most demanding games I've ever played. It forces the player to liberally apply their strategy/planning/tactical skills on every outing. Being "good" at Monster Hunter requires an understanding of so many layers I actually felt like I was becoming a "high rank Hunter" as my Hunter Rank increased. The challenges often appear overwhelming but the sense of accomplishment at the end of some ridiculous battle is staggering. I'll happily continue playing this past the 500-hour mark.

  • Resident Evil 5 took Resident Evil 4, one of the best games of all time, and improved almost every aspect of it. The story is lacking, but the gameplay and heavy emphasis on co-op make it a fantastic follow up and one of the better games of 2009.

  • For whatever reason, I find it really difficult to put into words what makes this such a great game. For the sake of writing something useful here, I guess I have to say the atmosphere of this title is unbelievably strong. I'm also a huge fan of the intense difficulty...or rather the way it makes every move a contemplated step, just like Tupac said his were.

  • Insomniac has done it again.

  • Shatter is awesome. It costs $7 and is well worth every penny.
