If you are still on the fence about World of Warcraft here is why it is divisive (from the perspective of someone who do like it).
1. WoW is an incredibly influential title for its genre and sparked a ten year long cavalcade of competing products trying to go after the same target audience (mostly failing). WoW has probably caused developers/publishers to throw billions of dollars at a genre which suffers from the great "flaw" that people are very dedicated to their game and rarely play more than one at a time, for this reason some people might despise it.
2. The number one complaint I hear about World of Warcraft is that it "steals" friends. The game is good/addictive enough that a lot of people will decline or fail to show up to social events in favor of playing the game (socially with other people perhaps).
3. WoW along with CoD supports Activitions apparent belief that a franchise should be milked for every drop and that the brand will stand up to that kind of abuse.
4. Blizzard has added a store to the game selling ingame cosmetic items that are not achievable in any other way, treating a subscription-based game as if it was a free to play.
5. While things are finally getting better, finding a new friend who also plays WoW was always a painful experience since chances were close to nil that they play on the same server. Server transfer has been possible almost since the beginning, but despite the process now being near-instantaneous and automated it still cost a small fortune to move several characters to another server.
6. A lot of people seem to get into the game addictively, completely burn out playing it, and then proceed to complain about it every time they think someone might listen.
7. Some people spent a lot of time with the game before all/most of the expansions and are having a hard time accepting that the game has to move on. Many early parts of the game has been trivialized because the leveling process is so much longer, and people might feel this diminishes their achievements within the game. There has also been a lot of streamlining in the games classes and items, for example the classic talent tree is no more and is replaced by simpler (but arguably more meaningful) systems.
To contrast all of that:
I think WoW is an amazing game and that Blizzard are the best at most of the things I care about in an MMO, it never became a great addiction for me since I often just threw it aside when something else was interesting and there are so many cosmetic things in the game that the few in the store hardly matter.
