Electronic Entertainment Excess

So E3 has rolled around again, and the gaming world is, naturally, in a frenzy. E3 is great, full of new games and demos of games we've eagerly been awaiting for years. Thing about E3 is, it's a bit of a clusterfuck, full of showboating and needless spectacle. Yeah, to a certain degree the spectaclle does make E3- just remember a couple years ago when they tried to cut it down, that was no fun.

However, when what we're getting out of E3 is this crazy, cultesque Kinect event that really has almost nothing to do with anything relevant (especially since most of those Kinect games were shown at the Microsoft Press Conference), something is wrong.

Now, I love E3 and hearing about it, but how can a company justify spending money on this? Or Activision's party, rumored to cost over SIX MILLION dollars, featuring Lady Gaga or Eminem, depending on who you ask? How is that reasonable or really advisable? I guess there's nothing WRONG with it per se, but it always strikes me as extremely excessive when companies do things like this. Booth babes and press events in exotic an fun places have always been part of the gaming industry I guess, but I'm always left wondering why companies can't just let their products speak for themselves.

You guys agree, or do you think these events AREN'T excessive and are an integral part of the experience?

Hey, if it helps them sell even 100 more boxes, it's probably worth it in the long run. those people are buying games and natal, and telling their friends about the games and natal, and all those people then buy the next console and games and everything. So they're just doing what they need to do.

I personally believe every industry needs it's own "Superbowl Halftime Show".
Expensive, excessive, loud, obnoxious and has no effect on the actual game we're there to watch.

Even tho I never like the Halftime Show, the Superbowl just wouldn't be the same without it, I kinda feel the same way about the games industry and E3.

Maybe this is why games cost $60 nowadays, because the companies spend monies on stuff like this.
Seriously, Lady Gaga and Eminem? if they were related to the games they were selling it make a sense, but since I don't see one I think it's just waste of money.

I think it's too much, but I'm a guy who doesn't like when people beat around the bush. I'd rather it just be hit after hit, and stop trying to appeal to the mainstream by waving your dick around with how many sales you have. Just send a guy out, show me a trailer, give me a date, and repeat. The theatrics of it all are just unnecessary at this point, we're already here, you don't have to sell me on some bull.

Get to the point, and stop sending out people do dance around like morons. If you're going to do this Kinect, or Move crap, show me at least one game that can appeal to me as well as this, "casual," market.

It sure is excessive, but it isn't surprising. I go to events like this in the tech industry, and it always blows me away how they pull out the stops to wow a room filled with only members of the press. That's what seems silly to me - a good reporter doesn't get sucked in by all the flashy decor, so why bother?
