My Top Ten Games of 2012

This list was retroactively updated because I finally beat a lot of great games from 2012 in 2013, I'm kinda slow like that. WHOOPS.

Also:

Most Disappointing: Resident Evil 6 (What a trainwreck on almost every level... loved RE5, they probably should've just stopped at that one.)

The game I most regret not playing/beating: Mass Effect 3 (Got turned off by all the negativity following its release cause I Love(d) Bioware! Sad to see them in the current state they're in right now.)

List items

  • What a sudden surprise this was... another fantastic/addicting game from the Civ peeps. Nothing beats customizing your squad, dealing with the random oh-noesness of the missions and finding the most efficient way to save the world without losing any countries. Definitely the best game I've played all year.

  • One of the most engaging and successful stories I've seen in a video game, every episode had me on the edge of my seat. That save game bug was a real downer though.

  • Incredible Atmosphere, amazing music and a disorienting story that just sucked me in and didn't let me out until it was over. TONY!

  • Talk about a incredibly divisive game when it came to critical reception, this game got 3/10's and 9/10's from multiple places. As a longtime Hitman fan, I can safely say I fall into the "love it" category.

  • Amazingly addicting, this game stole my heart and crushed it over and over again. I was so pleased when I was able to have that "perfect" playthrough where everything went right and I took down the final boss. Helluva game. Everyone should check it out. Thanks Kickstarter!

  • A surprisingly ambitious game from ACTUAL Capcom (a great developer that is potentially killing its recent franchises with too much outsourcing), Dragon's Dogma has a lot of cool elements to it. Only thing that holds this one back is the lack of more AI party member control and some odd bugs/design choices.

  • Auction house kinda ruined this game in a couple ways, making loot less impactful and exciting as a whole. There also wasn't nearly enough diversity in the way you could spec your character. Kinda disappointing, but still a ton of fun and has that Blizzard feeling of high quality throughout.

  • Addicting and challenging in all the right ways, Spelunky is another wonderful revival for the "Rogue-like" type of games.

  • It's common sandbox tropes and mission design hold it back from true greatness, but as far as recent open world games go, this one is up there in terms of sheer fun.

  • I loved the previous Max Payne games and while this one deviated from the previous one's storytelling and setting, it still managed to capture the overall feel of those games. Well crafted presentation and story, really great gunplay and pretty decent multiplayer round out another quality Rockstar package.
