Hey guys! It's that special time of the year that makes me look in the mirror and come to terms with the amount of money I spent on all the video games I didn't play. Before I jump into my favorites, here are some other games and bullshit that I wanted to touch on. For the actual list, just scroll all the way down.

Technically “New” Games that are totally not new and I played way too much of

11 Games I wish I made time to play (In no particular order)

  • Attack on Titan 2 - “I’m a beefy boy.” Jeff Gerstmann
  • Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - The President just shot someone. Art imitates life.
  • Valkyria Chronicles 4 - I almost bought the physical version that came with a big ass vinyl tank statue that was like $100.
  • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life - That’s a damn Kappa on the karaoke screen, not a frog.
  • 428: Shibuya Scramble - Originally an amazing Wii Game that we finally get to play in 2018 on a system that doesn't suck.
  • Gal*Gun 2 - Don’t judge me.
  • Detroit: Become Human - How many robot sex slaves does David Cage own?
  • Vampyr - Not enough hair styles that looks like butts.
  • My Hero One’s Justice - The Grape kid should really be in jail.
  • Fire Pro Wrestling World - Alex Navarro was right.
  • Astro Bot Rescue Mission - PlayStation All-Stars 2 should have nothing but Astro Bots as the characters

Games that I should have liked but didn’t

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 - Everything about actually playing this game sucks.
  • Fallout 76 - Who thought it would be a good idea to make multi-player Fallout with no story?
  • No Man’s Sky (Re-release) - Still not a good game, even with all the additions.
  • Dead Cells - People love this game, I didn’t. Maybe I’m just getting too old and impatient?
  • Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise - On paper taking one of my favorite anime and giving it to the Yakuza creators sounds good right? It’s not.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - The lack of a story campaign and me dying every time literally in seconds really sealed that this series is just not for me anymore.
  • Forza Horizon 4 - Enough Forza already for god’s sake. Bandai Namco bring back Ridge Racer you cowards.
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Did we really need another Tomb Raider that’s pretty much the same as the previous?
  • Celeste - I like to enjoy the time I spend playing video games, no thank you.

  • Who knew Sony had the chops to pull off a “reboot” of a game series starring one of the biggest assholes the video game industry has ever seen, and actually make him into a sympathetic single dad? I absolutely loved everything about this game from the fun and deep combat to the road trip story of a bad dad trying to raise his son while coming to terms with his flaws. This game is gorgeous, emotional and all-around just a fun game to play. After four previous fantastic entries (I’ve erased Ascension from my mind), this is easily my favorite GoW game ever. With plenty of reasons to continue playing after the credits (wow that stinger), I couldn’t put the game down until I had the Platinum Trophy.

  • I’ve been playing Monster Hunter since it first came out on the PSP and every time I followed the same pattern with the game. 1) Oh this seems awesome, I can’t wait to put hours and hours into with my friends. 2) Playing the game once and thinking every system in the game is way too obtuse. 3) Putting the game back on the shelf and saying one day I’ll get back to it. Monster Hunter World finally broke me of that pattern. While some might bemoan the accessibility changes that made this game more streamlined and “easy” I thought the creators smartly made a game that I didn’t feel like I needed a Master’s Degree to play. They did something I never thought would happen, they made play a Monster Hunter game for 100 hours.

  • I hate Destiny, I love Destiny. This pretty much sums my feelings on a game series that year after year, I continue to go back to all the while cursing my need to keep playing it. Basically a do-over for Destiny 2, Bungie has fixed many of the problems and issues I had with Destiny 2. Somehow base Destiny 2 was able to make every piece of loot non-impactful and easy to get while also making a game that didn’t respect my time and gave me little reason to keep playing. Random perks have returned to gear and the exotic drop rate has been toned way done so it actually feels meaningful when you get a new exotic or a piece of equipment with great perks. While I still curse Destiny 2 every day I play (Especially Black Armory. They really should have communicated that the new activity should not even be attempted until you are at least 610), it’s now because I want to continue trying for high-level stuff that Bungie smartly made difficult to get. Wastedondestiny.com says I have played for 603 hours. Yep, that sounds about right.

  • I have a soft spot in my heart for traditional ass JRPGs. They were my favorite genre of game growing up and I still enjoy playing them to this day, simplicity and all. Of the genre, I go back and forth trying to decide if the Dragon Quest franchise or the Final Fantasy franchise is my favorite but the latest entry has moved Dragon Quest back to the top. While technically an updated version of a 3DS game, this game still looks amazing and is so full of charm that I never felt the typical mind numbing grind that comes with most JRPGs. Plus with the Dragon Ball resurgence this year, it’s nice to see Akira Toriyama’s art in more games.

  • What do you get when you give one of my favorite anime franchises to the best fighting game studio in the business? My #5 game for the year. Look, I’ll be the first to admit that even though I have loved everything single one of them, previous Dragon Ball fighting games have almost universally been terrible. FighterZ has all the fan-service you could ever want married with a deep and complex, while still being accessible, fighting system. My one complaint? Too many Gokus. #AllSystemsGoku

  • Insomniac’s made a superhero game that almost surpassed Batman Arkham Asylum as the greatest superhero game ever made. Everything about this game just screams quality and while my old fingers don’t work like they once did, I still appreciate the complex fighting system that actually makes you feel like a powerful hero trying to take down a menagerie of super villains that are some of the best in the Marvel universe. Did I mention that this game looks and sounds amazing?

  • It’s VR Tetris produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi. This has been become my go to game when I just want to unwind and play something. Let’s all become space whales.

  • Look, I have no rhythm. I've come to terms with that, but I'll be damned if I can't perfectly play Cruel Angel's Thesis or Cha-La Head Cha-La on a set of overly expensive imported plastic drums. This game is so good that not only did I buy it twice (PS4 and Switch) but I also imported both sets of drums. Nothing feels better than loudly playing the theme song to Attack on Titan and then immediately mellowing out to My Neighbor Totoro.

  • Persona 3 – 5: Dancing Collection (Cheating a bit)

    I shoved all three games into one because technically I got this as a box-set. If you like rhythm games with lots of circles and lines flying across the screen, this game is definitely for you. Persona 4 Dancing came out previously on last-gen consoles so it’s nice that a current-gen version was included as a download. The music is great and I found myself singing out loud to a lot of the songs that I loved in the games. I just wish I could pay attention to all the crazy shit happening in the background.

  • Full disclosure, Even though Hitman made number 10 on my 2016 GoTY list, something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it was the way everyone gushed about it. Maybe it was because I couldn’t make it through a level unless I felt everything went perfectly so I spent way more time than I should have trying to complete a stage. Whatever the reason, I probably didn’t give it much of a chance. Fast forward to 2018 and Hitman 2 is my number 10 game. Replaying all those missions from Hitman 1 with improvements made in 2 really made me appreciate that game more. Also since I never did a lot of that content, playing Hitman 2 now feels fresh and not just like more of the same. Guess what guys? Hitman is a pretty good game.

  • OK, I have to be honest that this game only made my top 10 list because I couldn’t stop smiling while playing it. I just started watching the fantastic anime recently and this game feels exactly like that. I loved running around the school, comically eavesdropping on the students. The side-scrolling, beat-‘em-up gameplay was fine but that wasn’t what I came to game for.
