My Unofficial Top 5 Games I Played In 2012

This list has nothing to do with when the games were originally released!!

List items

  • The Battlefield 3 that was released in 2011, is not the same game it is now, with a whole lot of UI work and gameplay patches BF3 was one of the best supported games of 2012. Though some of the expansions have been a little underwhelming, such as Close Quarters small scale, infantry only maps, the game itself has improved immensely. And the Armoured Kill expansion houses some of my favorite Battlefield maps of all time. All these improvements and additions are what makes Battlefield 3 number 1 on this unofficial list.

  • I'll start off by saying I love Halo, and here it's no different. Though some of the story beats may be dependent on that you have read a Halo book or two, you are still given enough information to make sense of what is going on. And the true story lies with the relationship between The Chief and Cortana (which if you've played a Halo game before, requires no explanation). The new enemy faction sure does look cool but their tactics and weapons don't add enough to really change the Halo formula in any significant way(which can be good or bad, depending on who you ask). Of course the gameplay is still very much Halo whether your shooting Elites in the Campaign or taking out fellow Spartans online, any fan will feel right at home.

  • I feel I may have messed up, in how I went about playing The Walking Dead. I loved it right up to the final scene and I look forward to season 2. But I feel the long break I took between playing episode 3 and 4 (and 5 right after 4), was enough to allow me to become emotionally detached from the story and characters, and though the ending shook me, it did not take hold of me, like I wanted it to. Moments after finishing I did not find my self deep in thought of what had happened, I had simply beaten a game. But I don't fault the game for this. What I will fault the game for is never really being able to trust my saved games with the choices I made, because of that "save" bug everyone was talking about(although I'm pretty sure it didn't effect me), and that one time where I almost lost all my progress (which may have been the scariest part of playing The Walking Dead). But it should be known that this is a great game with a whole lot of atmosphere, character development, and depressingly dark story, that should not be missed.

  • Besides Battlefield, Assassin's Creed III is the game I spent the most time with this year by far, and although Connor is no Ezio, I found the new lead of the series to be an alright fit. This game is very dense(and I mean that in a couple of ways) it has a ton of content, which for the most part is all interesting enough, but the hoops you have to jump through to access some of that content, is frustrating enough to steer yourself well clear of it(to the games credit, none of this stuff is mandatory). There are also more than a few gameplay bugs and technical issue that I ran into, along with a not so great framerate(I played it on the Xbox). But all in all these issues did not stop me from enjoying the game as at whole. The combat is very streamlined and simple now, to the point where you really don't have to be that great at it to feel like a bad ass, and after the story was complete I still spent many hours roaming revolutionary America.

  • I know the Xbox version of Minecraft is not the real Minecraft, but the Xbox version is what I played, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I cant see this as a game to be enjoyed by myself, playing with friends was the key to the fun I had. Digging deep into the ground to find rare minerals, building water slides glass houses, or entering the Nether Realm. Never have I been so scared of blocky monsters, or had so much fun building with blocks since playing with LEGO as a kid. Minecraft is a true sandbox where you and your friends can ultimately be idiots and have a good time, and that is why it makes this list.
