Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

  • Shadow of Mordor came out of nowhere from Licensed Game Hell and took nearly everyone by surprise. The core elements of the game, taken by themselves, are boring and overdone; but you take everything about this game and squish it together into the delicious game sandwich that is Shadow of Mordor, you get a fantastic game. Then you garnish that sandwich with the deli sauce called the Nemesis System, and you get an incredible experience with a truly living and breathing world where your successes and your mistakes alike can shape it. The experiences you can have with this game, and the fact that a person that doesn't even like Lord of the Rings could jump in and have a blast, makes this my number 1 game.

  • There was no better game this year than Smash Bros for hanging out with your friends. With all of the different modes on offer, and the interplay between both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game, Smash Bros just absolutely took over the television this year.

  • Shovel Knight could have come out in 1989 on the NES and it would have fit right in. It's exactly what you would have played on the NES with just enough modernizations to make it a flawless experience. The level design takes cues from both Mario and Mega Man to explain exactly how the game works without once throwing a tutorial window in your face. And the icing on the proverbial cake, Jake "Virt" Kaufman pumps out another phenomenal soundtrack. If there's one "indie" game you play this year, make it Shovel Knight.

  • Bayonetta 2 takes the craziness of the first game and turns it up to 11, and does so with some of the most stylish visuals that the Wii U has ever seen. The combat system is peerless, and cranks out the coolest finishers in just about any game of its type. The addition of the Nintendo themed costumes brings this game and its fanservice up to #4 on my list.

  • A crossover story right out of a fanfiction, Persona Q brings so much to the table. It's a dungeon crawler with some wonderful (and difficult) mechanics, and the signature story styles of Atlus's Persona series. You can't go wrong with this game whether you like Persona 3 or Persona 4. And if you like both, you get TWO stories! It's definitely a game you can sink your teeth into with many, many hours of gameplay.

  • Bravely Default is a classically styled JRPG with unique visuals and a combat system that refines exactly why I like turn-based RPGs. It's the best Final Fantasy that wasn't actually called Final Fantasy. Bravely Default is so user-friendly, as well. If I want to grind, I can turn up the encounter rate. If I just want to see the story come to a head, I can turn off random battles entirely. Not even to mention, the game has one of the best JRPG soundtracks I've ever heard.
