GOTY 2014

A ranking of the games I've played from 2014.

List items

  • The best mix of puzzles and narrative since Portal 2. I love how the story weaves together philosophy, religious, and technological themes.

  • Everything that's right about the Assassin's Creed series and the Rocksteady Batman games in one beautiful package. The nemesis system is a fantastic addition to the open-world genre.

  • I had heard a lot about Wolfenstein before I came to it but the world building and characters still blew me away. The characters feel so genuine and real. They don't worship you, they feel like real people with hopes and fears. The story moves along very quickly with some really neat set pieces. The massive WWII invasion of Deathhead's compound is so neat and feels so dynamic. The concentration camp feels oppressive and terrible. There are moments when you feel like a supreme badass and other moments when you the Nazis seem incredibly powerful.

The gameplay is fairly tight, the shooting feels pretty good but my main issue is with navigating corridors and fairly cramped environments. This is probably true to the old game but it feels very constricted with artificial barriers everywhere. There wasn't too much strategy in how to approach enemies but I didn't mind--that's not really what this game is about.

The world feels real, terrible but the people are human in the best way.

  • A great story with tremendous atmosphere. The way the puzzles relate directly to the narrative is fantastic as well.

  • I love seeing someone just go for it with whatever is in their head and Access Games totally did that with D4. The pacing is something slow and I would prefer a few more action sequences but I was also totally drawn into the world and mystery of D4.

  • I love the sense of humor in this game, it reminds me of Paper Mario! It's cheeky and fourth wall breaking in a great way. The characters are goofy but well defined. This game has some great platforming moments mixed with some light quest mechanics and Metroid exploration. The exploration mechanics also feel great in the simple combat.

  • I really like the idea of reimagining complex, mechanical games as board games. It's really neat to see how much Hitman Go can do with the enemies and player moving along predetermined, discrete paths. This game feels great when you figure out the best way to tackle a level.

  • This game looks great and the combat system is a cool take on Super Smash Bros. but the controls feel off and there's not enough substance.

  • I love the real object look and the cool town built in the sky but the point-and-click adventure part of the game is incredibly frustrating.

  • This is a stylish shooter with some cool sound design. It doesn’t really do much for me personally but it was neat to see.
