I spent two months painting this canvas.

And I reckon it's a marked improvement in time management over my previous effort. It's for a friend of mine who had the idea: black and white, water tower, paint scraped away (with knives, Bob Ross style). Those were his criteria, and this canvas, measuring 16"x20",  is what I came up with roughly ten sessions later. This one was actually fun the whole way through, which was kinda nice after spending two years on the last one. Anyway, I'm sharing this with you good folks because a few people requested to see my future efforts. Let me know if you'd like to see more.

I have to say that i prefer this to your previous work in the link. I like how moody the whole image is. I used to be alright at charcoal and pencil drawings but i was aways awful at paint. Good work! Keep on painting!

I like it. Makes me want to eat some shrooms. I think that'd would further improve my impression and appreciation of your artwork. It'd kinda look like it's made out of eels or living liquid light and darkness.

Reminds me a bit of that screaming man doing the Makaulay Culkin. Edvard Munch's famous painting...

Looks good! I have no idea how long it usually takes to make something like this, but 2 months is certainly better than 2 years.

Pretty amazing work!

I would mention that it references The Starry Night by Van Gogh, or you'll endlessly have people saying "Hey that looks like Starry Night"

got to admit, didn't like it initially, but after looking at it, there's something about the separation, as far as i see it, in how accurately, or if not accurately, at least meticulously, the fence is painted,

and how it separates both the picture and the two large round objects which both seem to have some crazy gravitational pull over the stars - which actually to me look more like souls or ghosts flying overhead

then that is reflected in the way the ground is represented; and the more i look at it the more it looks like the sea,

and this line of the fence is like a line of connected buoys, or a net, keeping everything in order with all the craziest around; leading somewhere, away from everything thats happening

can't figure out what the cluster of rocks/trees in the background is/represents - and the monochrome thing is explained by your friends request

the looseness of it is nice, the two year one is technically very well done but i prefer this

congratulations on sticking with it and improving on the timescale,

i wanted to keep painting but i know i'd give it up, and did - to do architecture,

miss the freedom and lack of over thinking as displayed in my over-analysis of your painting

good work though, have you ever tried portraits?

I really like it. I like how the fence seems to be completely detached from the field itself almost as if it is above being wild and without direction. I could psychoanalyze the shit out of it, but I will just admire it for what it is.

I really like the way you handled the technique. It looks great. I have to say I don't like the fence and the water tower, but the ground and sky look fantastic. I'm curious to know whether you started with a sketch, cause if you didn't, that would maybe improve the placement of things like the fence.

@mikeeegeee: Very nice. Looks like it has some extremely rich texture on it. Oil or acrylic? If that is oil it's going to take a lot longer than 2 months to dry.

Love the fence and the sky, but man the style of the hills just looks too simple. Can't say I love it because of that, but it's still great.

Hey everyone, thanks for the words! Encouragement and critique are pretty damn awesome, and I am grateful to you. (PS-- Currently simultaneously playing through: Mafia II, The Witcher 2, Saints Row 3, Battlefield 3. Guhhh).

@SimplyTron: Thanks! I kinda like my last effort better, too. Then again, I spent two years on it, so I'm okay with that. For something that took a fraction of the time, I can dig this water tower.

@SSully: This sounds ridiculous of me, but I honestly didn't have "Starry Night" in mind when I painted this. Now, looking at the pictures, the influence is pretty damn apparent. Huh. I'm going for Wassily Kandinsky next.

@RockAction: That was actually really fun to read. It's funny, the thing you mention about the stars seeming to be souls/ghosts had occurred to me, too. And I have not attempting painting portraits, no. I did draw myself back in high school, however. But.. you can tell. Anyway, you should seriously paint sometime. I really try to encourage everyone to do it, regardless of ability, but the time isn't always available. It's a sort of release I think more people should experience.

@Kyreo: Dig your reply, hombre.

@somnambulist: I actually created two small-scale rough drafts, but it was mostly for stylistic reasons. I wasn't sure if this technique would work better on panel or on canvas, so I bought a small version of each and created a couple 30min versions of this. The fence never showed up in the rough drafts, but I got some valuable experience working with shitty plastic knives and figuring how I'd want to do it. Anyway, where would you put the fence? If it's not... geometrically correct (and many of my shapes are shoddy in that way, re:the tower in the 2 year painting), I maintain that I try to encapsulate a certain degree of... whimsy in my paintings. I can't even say that without developing a severe case of shiteatingrin.

@TerraMantis: Thank you sir, it is acrylic. I'd like to do more with oils, but it's hard to have the patience.

Wow, that's really great. I criticized your other picture but this one looks really nice.

The only thing I'd say is that the water tower looks weird, it's not really defined enough and seems a bit flat compared to the rest of the scene. I would not know it was a water tower without you saying.

Definitely keep posting these, it's fun to look at them.
