Life in the Blacklight 1: A New Day Rises.

Hello, This probably part of a monthly blog series I’m going to start doing. Maybe it will be weekly who the fuck knows, not I. As you can see grammar and spelling will not be at full force because while I will be doing proofreading, my main editor will not be looking at this. Hopefully this gives a more raw approach and doesn’t totally destroy your comprehension of what I am writing.
Now that I’m done explaining why this could possibly suck let me explain why this could be somewhat interesting. The title Life in the Blacklight has some significance. It is a play on words of the usual phrase “life in the limelight.” I think Life in the Blacklight is a fairly concise way to describe content that I produce. I haven’t hit it “Big” but really if you go into doing content on the internet for the purpose of becoming famous maybe that’s not the best idea. So, back to what I was saying Blacklight, my content is noticed more by those in the independent sector even though I do reviews for the big games and movies occasionally as well. When I say occasionally I should probably put that blanket statement on everything. Hopefully one thing this blog will help me start is getting on a consistent schedule.
I have back catalog of review copies and interviews I haven’t finished. It feels very wrong to misplace someone’s trust of giving you a copy of a game for the sole purpose of reviewing it and never doing it. To be fair I could review all these games in a couple hours but I want to give them their fair shake and play them to completion. I also want the reviews to be semi decent. I do have a job and school as well.
One of the hardest things in doing content is playing to no audience. An audience hates you for reasons that you can control I am fine with. An audience that hates you for reasons you can’t control (like your voice) is worse than no audience.
I think I will return to doing half what the site I own is called. If you didn’t know my site is called thereviewcast.com (shameless Plug). While I find it difficult to want to do a podcast anymore (if I started again I’d be on my 6 podcast including reboots) I can still see some enjoyment in reviews. I was planning on just doing a series where I play all my games I haven’t played yet (I have a sizeable backlog on games). Though, I can’t bring myself to do it. I really don’t want to polish a turd of an idea. It just doesn’t work so well. When I did a series called Reviewcast First Impressions (Quicklook knock-off Whatthefuckis knock-off etc.) I wasn’t having fun because I was doing the same thing over and over with no challenge. A large part of making this stuff on your own is learning skills. I knew nothing when I started doing this and still used moviemaker, Now I’m using Adobe Premiere Elements (no 64 bit no pro L) .
The greatest thing I think I have done thus far is the interviews. I owe it to the man who runs whygamesmatter.com for inspiring when we were at a convention. At said convention Tommy Tallarico was there and I got his interview. The video I did asking him questions about his appearances in mega64 videos is still my top viewed video. Then I just started putting the call out to indie game developers and have gotten a tremendous response.
I think that wraps it up for the first edition of Life in the Blacklight. Next time I do this I will talk about why I try to work alone on projects.
