Here's a theory: I didn't see as many complete and utter douchebag-cunt-face-bitch-asshole-motherfuckers (the only proper set of adjectives for those people) before the quest system was introduced. Back when traffic was like, half as much as it is now (before the quest system), there were less people, and they were nicer people. This "fill bars to fill more fucking bars" system (joke stolen from Penny Arcade) drew in the kinds of douchebag-cunt-face-bitch-asshole-motherfuckers who get their jollies by filling bars, and I don't mean filling alcohol-serving bars with fly ladies; I mean on-screen bars full of slightly brighter pixels.
So now that we've got the douchebag-cunt-face-bitch-asshole-motherfuckers here, they're going to be in the comments, in the chat, and on the forums. Let's be honest; the internet is chock-full of this brand of person. Since you can't kill them and elimintate their dumb, bar-filling-addicted asses from the human genepool (because something something human rights), the best you can do is, as Jeff said, ignore them. I'll stick an addendum on that philosophy by saying you can also hope they don't reproduce.

Look at the comments in this thread. Like 99% of them are more or less "DUDEBRO HECKA SICK I NEEDZ MOAR ACHEEVMENTZZZZZZZZ LEVELUPLEVELUPLEVELUP!" So obviously it's gonna work, and put money in somebody's pockets, probably by drawing more people to the site, and locking in some of the possibly iffy people who are into the whole "I like big numbers next to my fake name" thing.
There's a philosophical discussion to be had about where that need for bigger numbers comes from, but I'll just say "something something capitalism something education! Something something something bred a need for instant gratification, destroying the idea of working hard now for a better tomorrow." Good? Good. Now let the 90% of the people do 10% of the work, and get hella achievements. Let's be the 10% of the people doing the 90% of the work, to keep 90% of the achievement-loving people happy, alright?

Unfortunately, I am a dedicated university student and play games for the fun of game, not the numbers it gives me to put next to my name that I made up for myself ("munnyman5"). I come to GiantBomb for the community, the GiantBomb dudes, the trusty reviews, the hilarious stuff, and the occasional glimpse of Drew. GiantBomb provides all of these things, and that's why I keep coming back. Also, I'm somehow a... Level 3? Whatever that means. XBOX achievements I guess?
Why? Because I love Brad Shoemaker in a totally Platonic way. Why? Because HE MAKES MY WORRIES "PULL A BRAD" (for all of you out there who are thick, it means he kills my worries. It's funny. LAFF. NOW.)
I love all 4 of these dudes. I'm just glad they've agreed to do the damn thing.
And since Brad has been taking flak so much since some hateful soul decided to make a page about "time-to-death," I'ma say how much I like things other than his voice. Because I do. And he's been nothing short of a god-damned CHAMP on recent Bombcasts.
