I don't considered myself much of a Makoto Shinkai fan, finding that he basically just made the same movie over and over again (with it just being prettier as he went along), but Your Name was outstanding. It was the first time I feel his works had an emotional depth and warmth to its story and characters as opposed to his usual understated ephemeral nostalgia melancholy.

I liked the original FMA just fine but it's profound how much better Brotherhood and especially the manga are comparatively. The story is just way more interesting and the cast is both far more varied and far better developed; so many of the side characters who by all rights should have been one note villains or nobodies wind up with compelling and emotional arcs who are able to contribute beyond just the Elric brothers and Mustang.

My only chief criticism is that the first 20 or so episodes are just worse versions of the manga chapters, made because the show largely assumes people are already familiar with the original series. But it's unfortunate because those early arcs are still really good and I wish they could exist in a better format along with the rest of the story.

@dsouvannarath: Mostly just because it's on the forefront of my mind because I just caught up in the manga, but the show "Land of the Lustrous" (which is available on Prime I think) is a wonderful, beautiful, and frequently heartbreaking show. It's by the same studio that does Beastars so it's CG like that but I think it really works for the whimsical, almost ephemeral style that the setting utilizes. It was my pick for favorite show the year it came out (2017) and if you're ever feeling too happy the comic is still ongoing and boy has been a lot to handle (it's still great though).

Girl Who Leapt Through Time is wonderful.

This honestly might be mine. It was the first time I felt as an adult the sort of feelings I had watching classic Ghibli when I was younger. All of Mamoru Hosoda's films are good to great, but this and Summer Wars/Wolf Children are just something else.

Oh god I've caught up in the Houseki no Kuni / Land of the Lustrous manga and I am now a broken shell of a person. I loved the show when it aired but I was not prepared for where the comic was going to go. It definitely has jumped ahead as maybe what I look forward to the most with regards to new updates.

It doesn't really have the romance component of Toradora, but if you want a feel good recent-ish show, Hitoribocchi was one of my highlights of the last few years.

I have been trying, to adequate success, to get through Hunter x Hunter for almost the past year, but keep coming up with excuses to put off the next episode so it's been a pretty snail's pace. Part of the problem has been that I was very into the manga about 15 years ago but fell off during the hiatuses and while I forget most of the major details I remember just enough that some of the earlier arcs are way more of a chore to get through than I expected. But I am remaining more or less committed, it's a series that has been a big black hole in my backlog and I definitely at least somewhat obligated to see it through when I cared about the manga so much way back when and YYH was huge influence on my early anime tastes.

I've dragged my feet on this for various reasons, but I'm finally going to try to get into Fire Emblem 3H. Had I waited any longer it would have likely brushed up against Cold Steel 4 in October and then I might have had to seriously wait until 2021.

@rorie: Is it mostly internet issues or having the burden of processing those files locally on machines that were probably not built or intended to do that kind of work? Or I guess a combination of both. Either way, BOY that sure sounds like a pain!
