E3 2011 - Electronic Harder

This was a strange E3 for me. My computer died about a week before the festivities kicked off, so I was left without a major information lifeline. Instead I was forced to watch most coverage with the rest of the unwashed masses on G4TV. Needless to say I watched a lot of Giant Bomb content second hand long after E3 2011 ended.

My tastes in games differ from most people, so you'll probably notice a lot of obvious omissions. You won't see me at midnight launch events for Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3... well then, we're ending quite a few trilogies this year! And while I thought the technologies behind the Wii U and the Playstation Vita were intriguing, I have no short term plans to get on any reserve lists for those products, therefore I have omitted games for those products.

List items

  • I've bought every single Assassin's Creed game on day one, and I've never regretted any of those purchases. Honestly, if Ubisoft wanted to spit out a new game in this franchise every 6 months, I'd probably be on board with that. And Old Ezio would kick Old Snake's ass. There, I said it.

  • I played a lot of Oblivion. Maybe not as much as some of the more avid fans, but I enjoyed it enough to know that Skyrim is not screwing around.

  • I still have to finish Mass Effect 2. I know, I know, it's a travesty that it's still unfinished. But for what it's worth it took be nearly two years before I fully appreciated the first Mass Effect, so I expect a two year grace period for the sequel as well. At this rate I should get around to Mass Effect 3 some time in early 2014.

  • I've been following this title since Giant Bomb started bombarding us with info on it, and Bastion is really the type of game I attach myself to. Overhead hack and slash with colorful graphics and a hint of narrative.

  • Insomniac can do no wrong when they explore their humorous side. While you won't find me on board with their Resistance franchise, and none of the OverStrike footage was gameplay, I think Insomniac deserves the benefit of the doubt in suggesting this game could end up being a multiplayer class act.

  • I'm disappointed that Sucker Punch does not appear to be developing this title, but my adoration for this series is enough to get me interested. More Sly = more fun!

  • During the Ubisoft stage show, there was a section of gameplay where giant Tetris blocks start falling, and the classic Tetris theme song starts randomly playing in the background. I openly admit, that tugged at my strings - hard. I love the colors, we'll see if the manic gameplay holds up.

  • I;m not a huge Bioshock fan - I've never completed either of the previous games (though I do feel guilty about not finishing the first one) - but the footage of Bioshock Infinite definitely raises some eyebrows.

  • The first game was probably the only THQ game I've ever willingly purchased, and I enjoyed it a fair bit. The second game in the series will give developer Vigil some lessons to build on for sure.

  • Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Punishing. Gimmie.

  • I have an on-again-off-again relationship with the Tomb Raider series. It seems like whenever the series starts to get good again, they find a way to screw it up again. So I'm interested to see this new direction Lara Croft has apparently decided to go in.

  • To say I played a little bit of Wipeout in the old days is an understatement - Wipeout XL for the PSX is one of my favorite racing games, and I think Wipeout Fusion for the PS2 got more crap than it deserved. New Wipeout content will hopefully bring this franchise back to its super-fast rail grinding roots.

  • I first saw this at PAXEast and it won be over with its visual style. It reminds me a lot like Solar Jetman for the NES. If it plays anything like that, I'm sold.

  • Amalur is falling under the radar, which is a shame as most of the folks developing it are big names with huge projects under their belts. I'd probably be even more interested if the name of the game wasn't so goddamned awful.

  • Morbid curiosity always brings me back to David Jaffe's doorstep. What sinister creation have you unleashed upon the world this time?
