So why should I buy a PS3? - my subjective look at the library.

Now that the price of the PS3 has dropped, and whilst it is still too expensive in my opinion, I thought I would do an analysis of the library and see how close the games were getting to drawing me in.  So, it was off to Metacritic and a look through the entire list.  This is how I see it.

A+ games - those that I would absolutely have to have:

  1.  Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (what a great series)
  2.  Valkyria Chronicles (looks awesome)
  3.  Demon Souls (also looks awesome)

A games that I will certainly want, but could wait quite a while for a price drop:
  1. Civilisation Revolution (I can get that on the 360 anyway)
  2. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (I can just get that on the 360)
  3. Folklore (seems interesting enough)
  4. Little Big Planet (looks like fun)
  5. Resident Evil 5 (I can just get it on the 360)

With just 3 must have games for me at this, despite the fact that they look awesome, and 2 more exclusive games that I want, apart from the cost of the system being too high, there needs to be more games I love before I start some serious consideration.  However, it was a good exercise for me as I consider myself better educated for it.  My 360 is still giving me enough HD gaming it seems.

For the record, get Oblivion on PC. Unofficial patches for those games fix things that Bethesda have still missed.

I'll name a list of other good games for the PS3.
The Ratchet and Clank games
Uncharted
Infamous
MGS4

As well games coming in the future

God of War 3
Heavy Rain
The Last Guardian (this. THIS)

360 I guess is good for every other game that's third party, but for PS3, it's very good for the exclusives.

There's also Metal Gear and Uncharted out, plus God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain to look forward too. And don't forget about the blu ray drive.

Give Ratchet and Uncharted a try. They're both very good games with well realized characters and stories.

What about FF13? Or at least what's supposed to be the better version of it?

Mass Effect 2 and Halo Reach is enough reason for ANYONE to want to keep their 360. Don't forget about the really cool B and A exclusives, too, like the tons of RPGs.

But Folklore is actually really, really fun. I like to describe it as a mix between Silent Hill and Pokemon, as outlandish as that seems. Very cool game. Alos try out the original Resistance (haven't played the second one). LittleBigPlanet is fun for a while, but prepare to become frustrated at the most idiotic deaths and glitches and bad online (due to other gamers also dying of stupid deaths and taking up all your lives because in a REALLY bad move, 'Lives' are shared).

When you're buying a console or comparing consoles, don't ever do it based on the quantity of games you want.

And not even thinking about buying Uncharted, Killzone 2, MGS4, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank or InFamous should be listed as a crime.

Actually, now I remember, I have Oblivion on PC, but it was given to me and isn't genuine.  I want a proper copy.  Are the bugs that bad?  I like consoles for the ease of the big television (too much of a hassle to move the Mac into the lounge room to connect it).

I never got a Ratchet game on the PS2 or PSP, so it isn't really something that grabs me - more a bargain/clearance thing.  Infamous (like Prototype) just isn't my thing.  I saw full video reviews and killing and blowing up or throwing stuff would get old quick for me.  Unchartered is another bargain type.  I couldn't get interest in MGS.  I got one for the Xbox and gave up real quick - I got bored.

As for the future, I  really didn't enjoy GoW for both the PS2 & PSP much, so no.  I just went through the future list (those with release dates) and this is what interested me:
  1. Trinity Universe (Japanese RPG from Nippon Ichi)
  2. Katamari Forever (you have to love Katamari, but it is for the 360 as well I think)
  3. Final Fantasy XIII (eventually)

Not that much extra to be honest.  Still, at least there will be a reasonable number of cheap games when I finally get one.

Then let the lynching begin  ^_^

Unchartered - bargain bin.
Killzone 2 - almost certainly never.
MGS4 - almost certainly never.
Resistance - almost certainly never.
Ratchet & Clank - bargain bin.
InFamous - almost certainly never.

You need to keep in mind that my tastes lie with RPG and strategy (not the war/killing type).  How else can I compare if it isn't about the games.  The games are everything.  I hate the 360 as hardware, but love some of the games.  I just got Infinite Undiscovery and I love it, along with Eternal Sonata.

We don't know anything about Halo Reach, but it's going to be Bungie's last Halo game. So, they will definitely end their part in their franchise with a bang... I would assume. I am going to guess that Mass Effect 2 is coming to PC a little later than the 360 version, same with the first one.

@oldschool: Oh yeah, and I would suggest getting Uncharted at bargain bin, too. The game is great but it's definitely not worth it's full price simply because it's over way, way too quick. It just leaves you feeling kinda empty, especially after you've bought it full price.

And hmm... seeing as you like Disgaea... do you have The Last Remnant? If not you should try it. If you like games as obscure as that, The Last Remnant is wicked, especially the PC version, but 360 version is awesome too (don't listen to haters who say the frame rate is bad - just install to HDD and it helps phenomenally). It really is a great and EXTREMELY challenging game.

These are not games that excite me much for the 360 either.  I have Mass Effect, but so far, have found it very difficult to get into (just as Fallout 3 has been).  I really don't like Halo, 1 & 2 bored me.  Halo Wars has been some fun, but I like RTS and the Halo aspect is really incidental.

That is the last feature I care about as it will never get used.  The region free aspect is the big winner.

I agree and the quality of the games is subjective.  I listed the quality games and there are not a lot.  I am sure there are many quality games not on my list, but if I don't care for them, it is irrelevant.  The list of games I want for the 360 (and I have most) is longer, but not very long,

Not to be an ass but to buy a next gen console, you should be using a HD TV and through that HD TV you be using HD media and so playing DVD movies is kinda a waste.

I have HD plasma television.   You are assuming that I buy or rent blu-ray movies and I don't.  That is why I don't care about it.  The dvds I watch (free loans from my library) look more than fine on the screen and I am not inspired enough to care.

Heavy Rain is starting to make me hate myself for not owning a PS3, but I have to think about my priorities. Right now, video games just aren't one of the important ones.

Well now would be the time to buy it man, I would highly suggest Killzone 2, it gets a lot of negative shit from people who A. never played it or B. played it for 10 minutes, the controls grow on you and starts to feel how shooters are meant to be, with weight in there guns.

So I guess it's safe to say you don't care for action-oriented games much. That narrows it down quite a bit. So what about the Buzz! series, MotorStorm series, White Knight Chronicles, SingStar series, The Eye of Judgment, Heavy Rain, or Siren: Blood Curse? I'm not suggesting you like all of those, just trying to determine where your taste lies.

Oh, and Katamari Forever has not been announced for Xbox 360.

Sorry Buck, but I explained Killzone 2 above.  It just isn't my kind of game.  I don't care for any war/shooting type games (like Call of Duty type stuff).  Once I take out these type of games, plus sport games and most action adventure games, the list gets very small.  I have Devil May Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed for the 360 and they are now just filling my library.  Bioshock is the only one I have actually liked.

Buzz - no way.
Motorstorm - bargain bin (I like car racing, but they are easy to get cheap later - GT5, GRID, Dirt et cetera)
White Knight Chronicles - looks to have potential.
SingStar - for my daughters (I have the PS2 games and that is fine)
Eye of Judgement - not really.
Heavy Rain - I covered it above, but not jumping out at me.
Siren - no.

I'll just give you an idea of what I like on the 360:
Have - Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect. Viva Pinata, Banjo Kazooie, Infinite Undiscovery & Fallout 3.
Still looking to get - Fable II,  Star Ocean: Los Hope, Last Remnant & Tales of Vesperia.

Please stop using games that still haven't been shown, such as the last guardian, as reasons to buy a ps3; it only makes you seem that much more biased, and some may read it as defensive, as well.

And, seriously, Heavy Rain looks like several hours of generic tv  made up of quick time events.

I assume the first paragraph is directed at others.  However, I do think you can make judgements on future games though, if they are in the genre you like, a franchise you play and a developer you trust.   Not a lot on offer in that regard though for my tatstes.

When I was reading about Heavy Rain, the words that stood out were "quick-time events".  I really don't like quick-time events.

I don't think the 3 I really want is enough justification to be honest.  It needs to be about 10 games for that.  Taking out the multi platform ones, there is only 5.  I reckon another year might get it there, and by them, maybe a better price on the system (currently $499 for the Slim and I won't pay more than $400 - Aus prices).

@oldschool: Yes, your response about Heavy Rain was posted after I loaded the page so I didn't see. I would highly suggest doing more than just reading about it. There are plenty of videos, like in this thread.

And I'm not sure about the prices where you are, but MotorStorm is already a bargain bin title here -- it's only US$13.79 at Amazon. I would have also suggested The Last Guardian, but there is so little known about it that other than the E3 trailer the best way to determine whether you'd be interested would be to have played ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, which I'm not sure you've done.

Believe me, I can afford it.  I just got a quarterly bonus that could buy 2 PS3 and still have some left over.  It is about how much fun I can really get and a judgement about price.  Sony screw PAL regions and I don't like rewarding such behaviour.  As for denying myself, whilst that is true in a sense, with a Wii, 360, PC, DS and PSP (current gen consoles), it isn't as if I haven't got plenty of choices as to where I spend my money.   I really still see myself being a good year from owning a PS3.

" @oldschool: Yes, your response about Heavy Rain was posted after I loaded the page so I didn't see. "
I do own ICO, but not Shadow.  Future games are too academic to get to involved in them.  Time will tell how good they are and how much they personally appeal.  The trailer for Last Guardian certainly looks nice though, but time will tell.

I was thinking about how we make value judgements on the items we buy and their relative cost.  Here I am saying that a PS3 is not worth $500, and I have laid my reasons out for doing so.   Then I compare that to just last week buying a DSi for $300.  Place the two side by side and ask an entirely objective question - which is better value?  Answer can only be one - the PS3.

Worse still, is that I have 4 DS already (2 Phat & 2 Lite) and I can play all my games on those anyway.  Sure, I can't get DSiWare, but honestly, there isn't a single thing I can't even slightly live without.  So why would I get the DSi?  I can rationalise it very easily for me, but in truth, there is no way I could rationalise successfully to any off you.  I just want the DSi.  I have every handheld console from Nintendo and have loved them all.  I also love the games and how they play on the  systems, especially the DS.  I admit it, I want the new shiny one (even though it is actually matte finish ^_^) and I want that bigger screen.   I just know that my DS would get used more than the PS3 at a ratio of 20-1 and the new one kind of makes me feel good.

Do you have trouble justifying your decisions in a rational way and just simply accept that you want it more?
