We don't know much of anything about Scorpio. PS4 Pro is out next week.

PS4 Pro is about to be 3 times more powerful than the current Xbox One.

I'd love to know more about Scorpio but I just found your post a bit disingenuous with praising something that has no concrete info.

@opusofthemagnum:

Edit: it appears quoting doesn't work on iPad?

Yeah mobile quoting doesn't seem to be a thing.

We know what we've been told, we know it's targeting 4k real time rendering, we know that it'll have certain features like 4K bluray.

I wouldn't call it praise, I'm just predicting based on pretty solid information. Not to be confused with concrete facts. It'd be silly to assume the Scorpio is coming out a year later and using the same or inferior hardware. It'd also be silly to launch it much more than the PS4 Pro is launching at cost wise because next year you will get more hardware for the money compared to what Sony has avilable to them. That's why I don't get the assumption that Scorpio will be super expensive. MS has been pretty good at keeping costs down for quite a while, logic tells us that because it's a year later it'll be a year cheaper or a year more expensive and MS has said they are aiming for higher performance than what Sony was aiming for with the Pro.

As for the "3 times more powerful" thing... based on what metric? Are games running at 90fps at the same settings? Are games running at three times the resolution? (no, they are running at 1.5 times the resolution for the most part). Knowing how much more powerful it is is hard to pin down, just because it has "triple the -insert single metric here-" doesn't mean it's really three times as powerful. Hell even being able to push up the resolution from FHD to UHD doesn't mean it's 3 or 4 times more powerful, it just isn't that simple. Especially if we look at individual games. Look at games, it's all over the place just how much they are gaining.

I used very little firm language saying "I know this." It was pretty much all qualified with a "maybe" of sorts.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade I just think Sony is miss-stepping on the Pro. From a business standpoint I'm not confident it'll be as successful as it could be and I suspect upgrading customers may have reduced satisfaction due to the lack of features and having a bigger, better upgrade coming tot he "other team."

Like I said though, what do I know? We'll see how it rolls out.

It's not perfect - and it's really dumb that it doesn't sport a 4K Blu-ray player - but I don't hate the PS4 Pro. Being primarily a PC gamer, this seems very similar to upgrading my CPU or GPU after a period of time.

If somebody is new to consoles, go buy the original bundle that is ~$200.00, especially with Black Friday right around the corner. If you like your current system, keep what you have. If you have limited funds and need to buy select systems, hold off until Scorpio in 2017 (if not delayed, if it does't have a ridiculous price tag.)

But...if you have some extra money sitting around, can sell or trade in the original system for credit/funds against the PS4 Pro, it should be a decent upgrade to the system that gives additional storage and really good 1K framerates/graphics or early access to some type of 4K and HDR (primarily upscaled) output.

I do agree that this is only a bump in performance and not true 4K rendering, but I've certainly made similar, if not significantly more expensive, upgrades on the PC. I have a GTX 1080 in my current system and 4K at 60+ FPS is certainly hit or miss, depending upon the game and settings. If nothing else, people have more options available.

It's just lacking so many features and seems to be positioned as a fairly small boost compared to other options like Scorpio. Another year and Scorpio could easily be the same price but significantly more 4K capable, will have more features that matter to a surprising number of people. The Pro isn't terrible... It's just not a great indication of Sony's plans for the future of Playstation. Gamers still want big, major shifts in technology. I expect a lot of people will be disappointed with the Pro once they see what the Scorpio has to offer and I don't see the Scorpio being wildly expensive like a lot of people seem to be assuming. Next year AMD could have tech that is substantially more suited to 4K in the same price range. Most likely will in fact.

I don't see enough people unhappy with current gen consoles that Sony needed to "get out in front" of Microsoft on this one. I suspect Sony will see a bump in sales but it'll quickly go away.

Hell what do I know though. I just hope no one buys a 4K TV for the Pro. It just won't take advantage of it enough to make it worth the cost of a good 4K TV at this point.

I also think 4K is way more achievable than people think on PC, which means a lot for next generation graphics hardware that will probably be in the Scorpio. Your 1080, paired with appropriate hardware, should be able to hit 60FPS in one of the best looking games out right now at ultra settings: Battlefield 1. If you know how to set settings, follow guides from nVidia on what settings have the biggest impact and tweak things you can easily get most games running and looking great at 4k on a 1070-1080. Even the 1060 can do 4K gaming in some cases.

On M2 drives: they can be either SATA or PCI-E. With SATA the benefit is obvious: form factor. Beyond that there's no real difference in performance compared to a 2.5" SSD. It's the PCI M.2 drives that are much faster.

How cringeworthy is this? And why watercooling...just...why.

Those coolers are very effective, quiet, and not that expensive or hard to install. Jeff says "because it would be neat." In the video. It's his build, what is wrong with a closed loop CPU cooler?

Also, pro tip regarding multiple hard drives in a PC: Get a tiny little 120GB SSD for your boot drive, then an SSD for games and/or big programs, and a 2+TB storage drive. Only put your OS and basic programs (if even that) on your boot drive, move your Libraries like Documents and Pictures to the Storage drive, and any time you need or want to change/repair Windows, it's stupid simple. I'm up and running in like 30-40 minutes when I reformat.

I need to know how they could be running Skyrim on this thing, especially if it's the remaster. That game is a resource hog on consoles, I can only imagine what its like on a tablet, that needs to have more than an hour of battery life.

Cool concept but I am incredibly skeptical that they can pull any of this off.

I'm about 6 minutes in, I think I'll have PTSD by the end of this QL.

Two minutes in and I am on fucking board. This looks great.

Pixel art again. No thanks.

To me it seems more of a callback to the early Doom, Quake, unreal games. I don't see them as "pixel" art but "pixelated" art, if that makes sense. I think it looks great. Pixel art is crappy when it's generic and looks like yet another pixel art indie RPG. This doesn't exactly look original but it's different from most of the stuff on the market with pixel art.

I'd love to play this game if I could use a controller.

I wonder if that would work. It seems so fast paced. I dunno maybe you could pull it off, but it seems like the twitch response of a mouse would be important for this.

Oh god.

I did not expect the in depth description of Jason's injury. I have a really strong stomach for a lot of fucked up things but nail related injuries are a legit phobia of mine. Insert nervous laughter here.

I still really like the singleplayer for this game. I am immune to the effect newer games seem to have on a lot of players not being willing to go back on the ridiculousness. Call of Duty 4 is a classic, where a lot of the current CoD games feel like they will be of their time. I don't think AW will be a classic the way MW/MW2 were.
As for the "hand holding" I feel like newer games do that way better, they just flow a little more. But I like the in game little scripting moments, because I'm not insisting on just rushing forward for the next polygon to make dead. If they stack up, I do the same.

Sounds like they redid the sounds to be less hollywood, sounds sharp. Looks real good too. I really hope this is available on it's own at some point. No interest in the new game but this I'd be happy to add to my collection.

I never had any issues with the PSVR demo station they have set up at our local Best Buy. The worst element was the drift, but that was just minorly annoying. I never felt sick, never had the pulsing movement that these guys are having. Really curious to know what is making that happen.
