  • The visuals are heartbreakingly beautiful and atmospheric, and its mature story of a zealous creator of worlds in a collapsing reality is gripping from beginning to end. Composed of still images fleshed out with a few water effects and live-action cut-scenes here and there, Riven may seem primitive, but it is still to this day one of the most REALISTIC video games ever made.

  • Despite somewhat dated graphics and atrocious voice acting, Deus Ex is an outstanding, philosophical stealth shooter/combat RPG, and was the precursor of hits like Bioshock.

  • A complex adventure game from LucasArts, The Dig features well-realized characters with interesting relationships, beautiful environments, fair puzzles (not as difficult as Riven, but still challenging) and an engrossing mythology for the abandoned alien civilization our astronaut heroes find themselves in. This game also inspired a novelisation by Alan Dean Foster.

  • On top of an engrossing storyline and a chilling antagonist, System Shock 2 made extraordinary use of shadows, vivid sound design, claustrophobic environments and some thoroughly messed-up, grisly imagery to create a terrifying experience. SS2 worked so well as a frightening sci-fi horror game that I never even finished it!

  • I'm not very fond of RTS games, but the remarkable story and convincing characters in Starcraft elevated this game to my top five.
