DVD/Bluray Roundup - Short & Quick Reviews

So, I have not gotten around to seeing a film in the theaters for sometime, though that will change this Sunday when I see the much-anticipated Avatar. A review will naturally follow and then you all can see whether or not it lived up to the hype. In the meanwhile, I have seen a few films through Netflix that are not heavyweights but worth mentioning. I am going informal with these reviews but, no worries, the trademark, RHCPfan24 analysis style will return for the Avatar review.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard

Directed by Neal Brennan

No Caption Provided

Released in 2009

Sometimes a cheap, raunchy comedy is needed in a time of serious releases and The Goods fits the bill well. With a talented cast including Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, Rob Riggle, Kathryn Hahn, David Koechner, Ed Helms and the always lovable Ken Jeong, the actors alone guarantee this movie to be a fun, disposable comedy, regardless of a shoddy storyline. The story centers around a failing automobile dealership needing to make sales on Independence Day weekend and the help they enlist. This is, of course, Jeremy Piven and his crew who live and breathe car sales. There is a lot of fun to be had here as they tame the wild workers at the dealership including Charles Napier as a homophobic, deranged war vet. Kathryn Hahn, known from Stepbrothers, is entertaining in her attempts to seduce Rob Riggle's character who has a mental disability in that his mind is as advanced as an elementary school kid. It is sad, but hilarious. The Goods suffers from the typical, weak middle section flaw that is common in comedies of this sort but is a hoot in the end.

Angels & Demons
Directed by Ron Howard
Released in 2009

Following in the footsteps of the simply terrible Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons has no where to go but up. It does in that regard but the amount is minimal. Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor who seems to be the only source for solving the cases that Vatican City and the Roman Catholic Church can find. He is introduced by an extended scene of him swimming in the Harvard lap pool, approached by a Vatican official. Because everyone wants to see topless, 53-year old Tom Hanks, right? Nonetheless, a group of a bishops has been kidnapped after the pope's death, messing up the selection process and panicking the clergy. Langdon must find the bishops before it is too late and is joined by Ayelet Zurer, the pair of which displays absolutely no romantic chemistry whatsoever. Ewan McGregor is also here as the clergyman with close ties to the late Pope, seeking to avenge his death. All of this is combined in overly expensive shots, flat dialogue, bland exposition, nonsensical action, melodramatic chase scenes and a plot twist that makes so little impact because the connection with the characters is nonexistent. Some praised Angels & Demons as a great improvement over its predecessor. It is a success in that I did not walk out of the movie, though I am sure I feel asleep. I probably dreamed of a better movie during that time so my opinion is certainly slanted. If you want to properly watch Angels & Demons then do so on comfortable couch/bed and consider your snooze time as the best part.

The Brothers Bloom
Directed by Rian Johnson
Released in 2008

A small, overlooked film, The Brothers Bloom is a carefree, enjoyable, if flawed little movie. Starring Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Weisz, there is some great talent in the leading characters and they all play well off each other. The story is basically about a pair of brothers who are also professional con-artists and pull off

big jobs with ease. They are joined by "Bang Bang," their Japanese sidekick played by Rinko Kikuchi of Babel fame. The whole style is very interesting but it fails to pull of a Wes Anderson balance between quirkiness and hilarity. There simply is not a lot that makes you laugh, though you might be mildly entertained. Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid from Harry Potter) is one of the brightest spots of the film as the drunken "Curator," though his screen time is sadly very short. The film holds up however, and is a fun time for those looking for something different.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Directed by
Released in 2009

As a fan of Wolverine and the X-Men comics and movies, I thought X-Men Origins: Wolverine would be a fun, if fleeting, experience. It turns out, both of those expectations were way off as this was a terrible "blockbuster" that stayed long in my head in the form of a headache. On paper it works: take Wolverine, flesh out his origins story, throw action scenes in and end with where he is today. In execution, it fails miserably.

No Caption Provided

Before focusing on the man himself, it is worth noting the low grade of the characters surrounding the protagonist. The cult favorite Deadpool is played by none other than Ryan Reynolds, a presence with such little comic or acting quality that every line uttered was a disgrace to his character and the film that it was printed on. Will.i.am (yes, that one) thought he could act and plays "John Wraith," an original name that perfectly symbolizes the actor's innovation. In this case, nothing. There are other characters but they are all dreadful as the next and the group sections are a real trial to get through. Unfortunately, Wolverine himself is not much better. Hugh Jackman, buff in a rigorous exercise routine, shines physically but actually decreases in quality as Wolverine, with cheesy acting and a poor script to draw his actions from. Wolverine's brother, Sabretooth, is played by Liev Schreiber, an excellent actor in his own right, but unfortunately he is handed a script that makes him come across as stubborn and pestering. The batshit ending where the producers put all the money they had left, bought fancy special effects and set pieces, and threw it at a wall expecting it to stick is an offense to your mind and intelligence too. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not very much a disappointment in my mind for I had no expectations but it is a complete and utter failure.

Final Verdict:
1 Star Out of 5

Thankfully, I rewatched some good films, those that are not an assault to the integrity of cinema but a grace to it. They are the following, and all on Bluray:

  • Public Enemies - This gangster film about John Dillinger is a technical marvel as well as truly drawing piece of cinema. Johnny Depp excels as does Christian Bale, even if his part is very emotionless. The ever beautiful Marion Cotillard, one of my favorite actresses, shows her Oscar-worth and is wonderful as Johnny's damsel-in-distress. Keep an eye out for Stephen Lang too, the hard-pressed detective who steals every scene he is in. He has a great year with this, Men Who Stare At Goats and a big role in Avatar. A collection of fine actors and the directing finesse of Michael Mann combine to make a very good film. 4 Stars Out of 5
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Rewatching this movie was an interesting activity for me. I found it to still be one of the finest Potter films yet but I could not help but agree with some complaints that it was slow and rather plot-less. The book is similar but, as a film, that qualm really sticks out. No real action appears until the end and there are some sections that drag. However, character development is the focus of all these scenes, something I love. For those that love the Potter world and fiction, my original rating of 4.5/5 should still stand well. But for those who come to Half-Blood Prince and can't tell Ravenclaw from Hufflepuff then any other viewpoint rests well.
    No Caption Provided
  • Star Trek - Besides looking positively fantastic on Bluray, Star Trek is bound to be a sci-fi classic and is one of the best summer action movies of the decade. No other film in recent memory combined great action and special effects, a compelling, deep story and likable, hilarious characters as well as this. It really is a marvel in every way and a film that everyone, no matter if he or she likes the franchise or not, should see. 4.5 Stars Out of 5
  • Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino's mad masterpiece is a polarizing film in that some love it and others hate it. Some find the scenes to be dragged out too long and pointless while others have seen the light and know that it all contributes to the greater picture. I am part of the latter group and believe this film to be one of the finest of the decade. It is hilarious, insane, suspenseful, and, overall, brilliant as a fictional World War II saga. Christoph Waltz as SS Colonel Hans Landa is the star of the show and will surely grab an Oscar nomination and hopefully a win for a performance that I would describe as a tour de force in acting. He speaks in 4 different languages with distinct motions and a fully realized character that was given great thought. He is shockingly good, as he is unknown by most American audiences, and the real soul of this film. With him, the rest of the cast and crew and Tarantino at the helm directing it all, a megalomaniac project that derived from Tarantino's dreams was realized into a work of genius. It will be remembered for years to come. 5 Stars out of 5.

For a sec, I thought you were going to review features, and fidelity on the discs. Nice reviews nonetheless, never heard of The Goods before, might pick that up next time amazon has a sale.

Totally agree on the Angels and Demons. I tried to watch it twice and i keep falling asleep at about the same spot. This was my pick for worst movie of the year because it had some of the best resources movies can offer and they still effed it up to a point it is unwatchable.

You know I love your reviews. However, I have, for the first time, found a disagreement. Maybe its because I have a profound hatred of the Harry Potter films, but 4.5 for HP and the HBP is slightly painful to bear. However, I know a good few people who like the film, and your argument is valid, but...argh, I hate that film!

 Awesome reviews, there RHCP

The Goods is a fun rental, and I laughed through most of it.  Star Trek was really good fun and drew me in on a universe I did not have knowledge of because I never watched a single Star Trek episode or film (Although I plan to watch Wrath of Khan soon). Harry Potter 5 I saw twice in theaters, and the movie is okay but really disapointing if you're looking for plot development- its more of a development of the "romantic relationships" these kids have at their "hormonal stage"- ha,ha,ha. The Brothers Bloom looked really interesting, and I love the first few minutes of it which reminded me of Wes Anderson, then they kick into the "last heist" plot that was, to be honest, really confusing and some key points in it made no sense to me or wasn't explained clearly enough in the film whatsoever.

I tried to watch Angels and Demons in one sitting but couldn't, it was boringly bad. Most of the time here's how the movie went "Explain this, explain that, go here, look through here, find a clue, explain that clue, realize what the clue refers to, go to another place that clue refers to" and that goes on forever for me, so I never finished it. First time I saw Inglourious Basterds at the theater, I was confused on what I should rate it as, it dragged so many times for me that I was somewhat disapointed. THEN I saw it again on DVD recently, and watched it two times on DVD, and I've come to like the movie more (this same effect happened to me again when I bought Funny People on DVD). I'm bordering still on really good or great, I still wished some moments in the bar scene or the film references only a TRUE, TRUE filmbuff would know were removed, but nevertheless I recommend it.

@HypoXenophobia: Yeah I should have distinguished it but I am just watching these movies, not really the extras. I note some of the picture quality on the later movies but, yeah, I didn't do too much detail on picture quality/extras.

@me3639:
My god it really was terrible.  I am glad you agree because I had a friend who loved it. He didn't know why I didn't....*sigh*

@dbz1995:
Like I said, I understand why people don't like the movie but as a huge Harry Potter fan I really enjoyed it. Your complaints are valid though, don't worry. But now that you bring banning into the picture.....

It's cool. I only mention it because during Thanksgiving, I was thinking of buying Full Metal Jacket(great holiday movie >_>) for 10 dollars off Amazon, but supposedly they had butchered the video quality and skimped on the special features. So since then, I've been ultra skeptical about buying blu-rays without a heads up.

@StarFry64: I really love your analysis of all those films there. Brothers Bloom wasn't that good but it had a charm that I enjoyed. But as a movie, it was very flawed. As for Basterds, I am glad you are liking it. If you love Tarantino's style then you will probably like it but if you don't then you will despise it. As for the filmbuff stuff, I didn't even know most of what they were saying but Tarantino is being the smartass he is and showing off his neverending knowledge. He is pretentious but he deserves it given the quality of his work. If you have seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly then you probably, no doubt, noticed parallels in the opening scene as well.

Dood, don't blame Ryan Reynolds for the Deadpool thing.  The script was horrible, and in turn, Ryan Reynolds' performance had to suffer.  That dood is a diehard Deadpool fan, and he'll be playing Deadpool when the spin-off movie comes out.  You should listen to that dood talk about Deadpool.  It's fascinating.

Regardless, that movie was absolute ass.

@jakob187: Is he a fan? I wasn't aware. That doesn't stop the fact that he is one of my most-despised actors in Hollywood....everytime I see him in a movie or even trailer I know it is destined to fail. Unfortunately The Proposal is still being talked about =/

But I am glad you agree that this movie was complete shit. I couldn't agree more, except with if you said it was trampled, tire track-ridden dog shit.

For the most part I couldn't agree more. But I can't help but disagree on Public Enemies. I bought it on blur-ray and about half through the film I instantly regretted my lost money. I will not go back and finish watching that movie. Star Trek and Inglorious Basterds were two high lights of the year for me for sure and were both worth getting on blu-ray. Now I just can't wait for District 9 so get released on December 30 and will lament the fact that Drag Me to Hell is not getting a blu-ray release (locally don't know if that true else where) it seems.

@c1337us: Why didn't you like Public Enemies? Great actors, cinematography, action...most people I talked to loved it. I want to know why you thought differently. Drag Me To Hell was also released in the US a month or two ago and on Bluray as well. I am sorry if it isn't in your area, that is too bad. I preordered District 9 myself and can't wait to see that one again.

Public Enemies was an unexpected dislike for me. Generally speaking I do like Depp and Bale and co. so I expected at worst it was going to be a competent period peice drama carried by the actors performances. When I think about it and break it up into compenents piece meal I can't really find a strong reasoning for my position. As a whole it just didn't resonate with me. I guess I just wasn't feeling it on this occasion from them. And to be fair I only heard good things about it from my friends too so I guess I can't really explain it well. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood at the time I watched it and it put me off.

As for Drag Me to Hell it was only released here ahead of schedule on Friday so I couldn't say. I only know JB HiFi had their DVD stock out and I tried several of their stores and its all they had. It could be they got that shipment ahead of blu-ray and put it up impromptu I really dont know. I didnt get a chance to ask because the store was packed with christmas and all and I didn't want to try and fight the mob to speak to staff. I haven't bought it yet so I'll give 'em a call and suss it out or order it on blu-ray online or something.

@c1337us: About Public Enemies, I think I see where you are coming from. The emotional resonance wasn't there; Stephen Lang's final lines to Marion Cotillard were not the type that floored you like it could have been. Nonetheless, it had pretty good characters and I enjoyed seeing them talk and engage in firefights. It had its problems but I found it to be an original take on the gangster crime film. The digital, handheld cinematography probably was the reason why.

I saw Half Blood Prince recently. I don't think I'd give it a 4.5, maybe a 3.5. It was one of my favorite HP movies but honestly, I've never really liked them. I like the books a lot but seeing someone raise a wand on screen and wave it around reminds me of how dorky it is.

There was so much sexual tension in that movie as well. Kids making out (and who know what else) all over the place. It was weird. How many abortions do you think Dumbledore preforms every year? Do wizards even own condoms? Maybe magic condoms? These are the things that were going through my mind while watching it. The room of requirement scene with Harry and Ginny also made me think of terrible things.

HBP got me excited for the next movie though. That one should be pretty good.

I'm sad that X-men Origins was one of the few movies I saw in theaters this year. Such a waste.

@Dethfish77: Valid points, even if I have loved the HP franchise for so long that I remember dressing up as him for my 3rd grade Halloween. As for sexual tensions, yeah, kids were getting it on! I don't know how birth control works in the magic world though. I am sure there is some spell for that, but a rapist could always find the counter to it...

Very much enjoyed the BRD reviews! :) And I completely agree with Star Trek on Blu Ray. It is such a fantastic experience in so many ways on Blu-Ray. Oh I could rave so much about it, its just great! Hehe.

Good rundown.  Inglorious Basterds is probably my favorite film of the year.

I should really start to build up my Blu-Ray collection, I've only got the Dark Knight right now.

What do I overrate and underrate? "
Two obvious ones are xmen and harry potter.

xmen is not horrible, its like a 2.5/5

harry potter was not amazing, a simple 3 star movie.

congrats on mod upgrade.

cool review, but none of those movies really interest me. i liked x-men movies but wolferien one didn't really interest me. i have heard that they plan on making more spin off like this with the other x-men characters.  star trek movie especially didn't want to see. i don't like star trek and i think they tried to make it like a movie that everyone like star trek.

i recently bought bruno. it looks really good in blu-ray. tuesday i plan on buying district 9. i really liked the movie when it came out in theaters.

Man I thought The Goods was horrible.  All of the jokes were bad, and it almost seemed like the they were written by someone who had just read a book about how to make a comedy.

Also I didn't think Wolverine was that bad, not good, but a stupid action movie.  Although I'm not a fan of Wolverine, Deadpool or comic books so I wouldn't really know what they did wrong in terms of characters.  and I always hear people talking about how bad the dialogue was, but I didn't think it was that bad either.  Although I might have not been paying that much attention to it, I mean it's not the kind of movie I watch for great dialogue you know?
