Why are movies "official" media?

It's like, something isn't important until a movie has been made of it, and whenever you refer to a subject the movie is the first thing that comes to mind. Nobody makes nearly as much of a fuss if a book or a video game covers a certain topic, but if a movie is being made then suddenly it must be important! I think it's weird how movies have gained such prestige over such a short amount of time in our history of entertainment. I also wonder what will inevitably replace them when their time comes. Stuff to think about.
