My Worst Moment

Ladies and gentlemen, during tonight's Lantern Run, I made a terrible mistake with my language, one that I immediately recognized as hurtful, embarrassing, and just categorically inappropriate both personally and professionally. Giant Bomb has certainly been known to "work blue", but that kind of language simply has no place on Giant Bomb--and, frankly, in the world at large--not now, not ever. I was shocked myself when it came tumbling out, and instantly felt like the worst piece of shit in the world. Context is meaningless, because that word comes with too much of its own hurtful baggage to ever possibly justify.

I want to be crystal clear here: I'm saying this not because of some corporate mandate or some fear for my job. I'm saying this because it's important to me personally that I acknowledge the significance of what was said, and to own it. I feel miserable because that's not me, and it's horrifying to me to think that someone would take that awful outburst as some sort of implicit approval to use that word. That shit is just indefensible. As such, the archived version of the Final Lantern Run will be edited, though I wanted to make sure that this message got out there first, and that people know that this isn't a cover-up.

All I can ask for now is forgiveness for my gaffe. If you can't manage that, I understand, and hope that you can at least give me a chance to prove that I am better than what you saw of me in that deeply regrettable moment of frustration.

Ryan wasn't calling out anyone in particular who was gay so in many ways your comment is more offensive than Ryan's and more deserving of censorship and an apology.

And, at the risk of someone calling me entitled, what Ryan says on a video is not entirely his own. It becomes ours, the audience, once he says it. If he was ashamed of what he said and wants to edit it out, he's not the only one who gets a say in that. By your logic, no one has the right to complain about the Star Wars prequels. Once an artist creates and releases something, it's not theirs anymore.

Maaaaaaaan, all of this false outrage over people being "mad" at Ryan is pretty baffling. I don't think I've seen a person here actually upset at Ryan. What I see are a lot of people who don't like or appreciate the word he used being pleased he apologized and appreciating the candor in which the apology was framed.

The only arguments happening are people getting upset at other users here who feel that they know better than Mr. Davis and need to explain why it is not a big deal to use homophobic slurs.

"My gay friend(s) uses it, and they aren't bothered when other people use it either, so..." That is cool your gay friend uses it. Gay people are not a monolithic entity. We have all had different experiences with bigotry, racism, sexism, and all types of other messed up shit. If someone legitimately tells you saying something bothers them, just back off.

"It's just a word, it doesn't mean anything...!" Have you ever listened to a song and cried? Seen a movie and got scared? Read a book and felt upset? Those are all just words! They made you feel something, right? Words are powerful. The same reason a good speech can be rousing is the same reason language can hurt. Yeah, we get it, when you call the CPU controlled Luigi a "Blue shell using ***" you aren't saying it because you think he is gay. But when you do use it, you are making it that much more likely to use it in a hateful way in the future. And it will still make a significant portion of society uncomfortable hearing it regardless of context so just try remove it from your personal lexicon.

"You use (other word) I find offensive and I don't complain!" Please, complain. I can't speak for anyone else, but if you are honestly offended, a decent person will make an honest effort to not say things that upset you.

Ryan Davis gave a good apology. Yay for him!

I don't know what happened, I haven't seen the Latern Run yet (I plan to do it this afternoon), but I guess that if you said something out of place, Ryan, it was in the heat of the moment. You're a great guy and I refuse to believe you would purposefully do something that would hurt others, especially in the context of Giant Bomb, a website about video games.

and you know what? Han Solo did not call Greedo a F***** so lucas can change whatever he wants.

Fuck you offends everybody. It's not directed at one specific group of people. And, with all respect to Mr. Davis, context does matter. Example:

"I find the word faggot offensive."

-Some dude.

"FUCKING FAGGOT DIE FAGS GO TO HELL."

-Neo-nazi while beating a gay man to death.

Both use the same word. Are they both offensive?

George Lucas found error in what he originally did and changed it. So did Ryan. Just because Han Solo didn't call Greedo whatever the hell a "F*****" (fisher? fanman?) is, doesn't mean he doesn't get to change his original creation without your consent/criticism by your logic.

The apology? No. The edited video? Probably. Vinny got away with saying "cunt", which offends roughly 50% of the population in the old days.

Guys! Now that Ryans put out the apology and some of the gay community has offered their forgiveness, it leaves us with one important question:
What does Leigh Alexander think?

Somehow I knew this thread would diverge into bickering and arguing over the word. The important thing is that Ryan felt the need to apologize and that's what really matters.

CAH is cartoonish. Its offensiveness is far overblown. The closest thing to blue was "a big black cock" and who's going to get offended by that?

Great post Ryan. We've all said things that we immediately regret and by sincerely apologizing says a lot of good about their true character.

Context is also a pretty tricky concept to grasp. And excuse me for being a tad suspicious when somebody suddenly stops a conversation, citing "people like you" when my original post gives a pretty good idea of how I feel on this one.

@ThePickle There were worse things said during that but clearly you dont care for that point.

I really, REALLY don't think CBSi has anything to do with this. If Ryan was embarrassed about what he said (which he clearly was) of course he would ask for it to be edited out. If someone has the ability to edit out something they said that is not representative of then and that they profoundly regret saying, why wouldn't they? I certainly would.

You're confusing "use" and "mention", two basic concepts in linguistics. When Ryan says that context doesn't matter, he's obviously refering to contexts in which the word is used, not mentioned. All those offensive words are on the OED, but that doesn't mean the OED is offensive.

Ryan apologized, he didn't mean to use that word to offend anyone. Seriously, stop beating the dead horse.

fact; context is not relative. It always matters.

I have been picked on a whole bunch, but never for race of sexually orientation. I'm a white, straight, male, there's not a whole lot to discriminate against. But just because I'm not a minority or gay doesn't mean I can't be emotionally abused as much or more than someone who is. The same question goes for you, with a follow up question, have you ever said the word faggot or similarly offensive word in any context? Since I was true with mine I expect you be truthful as well.

I don't think you understand one lick of what it is like to be a marginalised person. People aren't offended for the sake of it. They are offended because these words are shouted at them in the street, it is what is whispered in their ears as they are beaten in raped. Inclusive language is an important goal because it makes the lives of marginalised people better, and stops the casual discrimination which tears you down day after day. This really has nothing to do with censorship, I'm not sure you know what the word means. You can type the word all you want. You can go and print a book with nothing but that word. Nothing will happen to you.

You have to understand, taking up this particular fight makes you very uncomfortable to be around. You are not an intrepid freedom fighter, defending the world from censorship. You are protecting the language of bigots. Let them fight for the right to say it, they don't need your help.

I don't think a blog was even necessary, your immediate reaction to it was enough. Still a classy move Monsieur Davis

While it's good that you can recognise and apologise for your use of homophobic language, it's a shame that the GB crew don't feel the same way for the misogynistic, ableist and at times transphobic language that is used.

I suppose a lot of people don't have the right perspective to see why these words are always (or at all) offensive, not that ignorance excuses it.

Hopefully this event will make people a little more sensitive to the use of bigoted words and will help make GB friendlier to the non SAWCSM populace.

Jesus people if your up in arms over a single word spoken in heat I hope that you people never make it to the likes of 4chan and the like.

We don't, because "you people" (as you delicately put it) are harassed and hounded out of those places.

Yeah but people are going insane of something said quickly and with a retraction on the internet like it's the worst thing anyones ever seen or heard ever. Saying he needs to be fired and such. Get a grip.

Who said that? I certainly didn't. This apology is better and more genuine than I've seen from more or less anyone, ever, who has used that word. It's something to be emulated and admired. The people ardently defending the use of his word are nowhere near as honorable.

I don't think you understand one lick of what it is like to be a marginalised person. People aren't offended for the sake of it. They are offended because these words are shouted at them in the street, it is what is whispered in their ears as they are beaten in raped. Ryan was not beating or raping anyone. He was playing a game, he got mad, he said a bad word. Ryan is not a bigot, he slipped up. Censoring it makes it a bigger deal than it really is.

Do you believe Huck Finn should be censored? Does anyone in this thread believe that?

at times? are you insinuating that they do not use transphobic language as much as misogynistic language? it's just as bad (which is to say not as bad as other places but still bad) (only seems not as bad because it doesn't come up as often)

I think every honest adult will admit to saying offensive things in jest to people they are very close to. I hate racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of descrimination. I also make sure everyone who knows me well knows this. And just about all those people have heard me say some horrible things to them in jest. What I'm trying to say is, words have no meaning without context. Words are not magic spells that do their evil work merely by being uttered. Who says them and how they are said always matters. I feel that I know Ryan as well as I can from years of listening to him, and the context of a friends multiplayer session is well known to me. So, not even knowing what he said, I understand and feel his apology is more than adequate.

Personally I don't see what the big deal is...

but at least you apologized to anyone who might have been offended, so that's nice I suppose.

You are constructing quite the strawman. I never called Ryan a bigot, or said that he was beating or raping anyone. He used the same word that is used in those situations, words specifically aimed at gay people, that means nothing else to a gay person. I also said specifically why inclusive language wasn't censorship in any way, and you yet again bring up censorship and something totally irrelevant (Twain is one of my favourite authors). Not only do I think you have no clue about being gay, you also have no idea how to have a discussion.

Well, I see that this thread hasn't improved since last night, but instead has actually gotten worse. Also, lol at the straight people telling me that I shouldn't be offended because they use the word all the time, and the couple people that said homophobia doesn't really exist anymore except in the older generation.

It's good to know that I can go back to ignoring the forums like I have for the past three years.
