proud (weird word to use but cant think of anything better) that you owned up to this immediately instead of trying to ignore it or rationalize it away. the sign of an adult, learning and growing from mistakes. i hope you manage to eliminate this kind of hate speech from your vocabulary entirely and maybe we all, staff and users, can use this unhappy incident to reflect on how the words we use can affect others. especially considering that homophobic speech is not the only kind of hate speech we hear, especially as gamers in our little horrible bubble. even in the worst of circumstances, there are learning opportunities everywhere and its up to us, all of us, to make the best of it.

Ryan, agree that that choice of word has no place in our community, but all of us know you don't represent that kind of hate. We won't let this change Giant Bomb. So do your part and stay true. People mess up. It's what makes us human and relatable. However, we own our mistakes and don't hide from them. Instead we use them to make us better.

I could tell that you were really sincere about it when you apologized but I never knew you felt this way about saying that word....  In a weird way through this post and through a live stream I was shown how great of a person Ryan Davis is.  Even though Ive never met you before my respect for you just increased exponentially.  Im sorry Ryan for thinking that it was really funny when you said that but with all that said, I really enjoyed the stream!!

We all say shit we don't actually mean in the heat of the moment, and if someone takes it to heart, it's up to us to come out and admit we screwed up and we didn't mean any harm, we just kinda let it slip. It was good of you to come out with an apology and an admittance of what went down, and don't sweat it, cause I guarantee a good chunk of us have at some point been there.

Personally, I am more surprised at the fact that Will Smith wasn't racist.

Everyone else's already said what I wanted to say. You owned up and you're a-okay with me. If this makes any sense, I think I have even more respect for you than I already did after reading this.

I didn't get to watch the lantern run live, but I think it is very honorable of you Ryan to apologize, I respect that. Seriously you are one of my favorite people in the video game industry. However I'm perplexed how any word can up stage Vinny's casual use of the word "cunt".

I agree. In order to have an informed discussion, knowing the precise word is critical, especially for those like myself who did not watch the Lantern Run live.

Sometimes it's not really about the word itself, it's just about reaching into your bag of swear words and slamming out whatever you happen to find. For what it's worth, I've always considered you an equal-opportunity kind of asshole, and of course the community still loves you!

I was listening at the time but somehow missed it regardless. In any case, apology made, blog post and twitter apology also made. Done.

I would hope everyone realizes that it was not said in any hurtful way. I am a little surprised you are editing the archived version, but I guess I can live with it as long as it is just a bleep or something, not cutting out sections.

EDIT: The more I think about this and the more of this thread I read the weirder this is getting. I am pretty sure he has said this word before while being recorded, if not that word specifically than worse words(having to dance around the special word is pretty fucking stupid(seewhatIdidthere)). Anyone who got offended about it was being stupid and/or looking to get offended.

I kinda doubt this would be such a big deal if Giant Bomb was still an independent site.....

Guess what? You don't get to decide what is or is not an "offensive capacity". That's why Ryan made this blog post, because good people don't try to rationalize it that way, they realize the truth and act like an adult about it, even if it was accidental. I didn't see the stream but from the comments I assume what he's said. The thing is if anyone has watched the live streams of him a Jeff driving home from work, he cursed that very thing in anger to drivers several times and certainly did not apologize for that. Its a habit he needs to break like many people do but saying "that's not me" isn't true.

Going to echo that there's no discussion to be had here regarding the word's offensiveness. You should be able to glean what was said from earlier comments in here, and it's not acceptable language to use on Giant Bomb by any means.

Also, keep it civil and don't be a jerk, but you hopefully knew that already.

I think the fact that you feel so bad about it shows that it was just an accident. I know I've said some pretty terrible things when I'm frustrated, even though I wish I hadn't. It's pretty embarrassing to go back and think about it afterwards. I think most people can relate to that, and will not rake you over the coals for one slip-up.

I think the real lesson here is that cooperative game modes of rapidly increasing difficulty with no end in sight are bad news.

If you do not know what Ryan said then read the entire thread. All you really need to know is that Ryan is sorry and the Lantern Run when it does go up will be edited.

Certain words need not be repeated. This is certainly one of them. Users who repeat what Ryan said during the stream are completely undermining what he is using this blog for and as such these comments will be deleted. Let's learn from mistakes instead of repeating them, okay?

'British Cigarette' and 'the other f-word' There's your two clues from the thread so It's not that hard to work out what he said really!

Even though I don't think anyone would have faulted you for dropping the matter after the initial apology, I think it's very admirable of you to take the time to write this post. You have my respect, good sir.
