2016 Games of the Year

This list contains my top 10 games from 2016 including 3 runners up of games I think deserved to be mentioned.

List items

  • I cannot talk about TF2 without getting hyperbolic, so I'll try to temper myself here. This game is amazing. When I'm not playing it I think about playing it. The single player was surprisingly great and the multiplayer was an improvement over the first game. Even when I lose in the multiplayer I am still having a tremendous time with it. The locomotion cannot be rivaled, the shooting feels good, and dropping your titan and having it kill 3 players at the same time by squashing them is unrivaled in fun. I would gladly pay for single player DLC if they choose to do any.

  • The year's best single player experience can be found in Doom. There is never a moment that isn't fun and ID somehow found a way to craft a story and world I cared about. Doom is an amalgamation of solid mechanics, graphics, and heart pumping soundtrack that all adds up to one of the best games I've played not only this year but of the past several. If the multiplayer were good and there was co-op this may have become my game of the year. They've knocked it out of the park with Doom and Wolfenstein...if only they could do something with Quake as well...

  • Overwatch is fun, there is no doubt about that. Great character design, great backstories (which honestly do not matter at all), fun class design, and all around great package. When this game is fun it reminds of playing vanilla Team Fortress 2 at release. However, the game gets hampered by terrible matchmaking and certain design decisions took a little too long to get ironed out. If I could enjoy myself, even when I lose (like in Titanfall 2) then this could easily have been game of the year for me.

  • Simply a fun rogue-light dungeon experience. While the game is harsh, I think it is pretty accurate for the Lovecraftian theme they are putting together (the studio's name is Red hook for freak's sake). Getting Wayne June to narrate the game was inspired brilliance on their part. He is still my favorite Lovecraft narrator.

  • Fun game that can induce a zen like state. Would be even better if the controls were better.

  • Great game and fitting end to the Uncharted franchise. If the game were maybe 3-4 hours shorter it would be a much stronger title in my opinion.

  • An amazing Hitman game. I really want to put more time into this.

  • Another great ending to a franchise. While much of the story parts were "member berries" incarnate, it was still enjoyable but much like Dark Souls 2...I never beat it. I need to correct that...

  • I loved this game. That's about all there is to say. If you love the oldschool R&C games you will appreciate this. Some issues with cutscenes are the only things I had problems with.

  • Great return to form for WoW. The most fun I've had with an expansion since Burning Crusade.

  • Interesting take on the Batman franchise that is hampered by technical flaws and the apparent, and typical, Tell Tale laziness.

  • If they hadn't played it so safe with this game it may have been worthy of more word of mouth and praise. Much like its predecessor they promise a rich world but it really just boils down to mannequins standing around making small remarks about stuff vaguely going on in the larger world. You never really feel any of that, even in the later 1/4 of the game where they ham-fistedly attempt to put it in your face. Still, I mostly enjoyed the game but they will really need to look for something new if they plan to keep this series going.

  • Fun but it quickly got old for me. I want to finish this and soon.
