"Yeah there are pictures on the wall covering all the holes because of Christmas fights" to "Yoshi can't be a knight in chess if he's always running straight ahead." within minutes of each other. My Goodness.
Look I can handle differing opinions but Mulholland Drive is great!
I think the main thing I'm getting from Death Stranding is it does feel like more visionary techbro than auteur theory at work here. It feels like this guy was given the resources to do whatever he wanted and what that ended up being--like certain billionaires shooting cars into space-- is he made this overly complicated walking sim. It has to come from the same place as these start-up bros thinking they have revolutionized the convenience store when in reality they just invented a vending machine. You've spent so much time trying to think big or trying to revolutionize "the world" that you spin back around.
At least with an auteur(or whatever other term) I feel like they aren't always pitching you on the thing inside the thing. There have been massive misfires in film and you can feel it when you see it but this just seems like a weird tech world failure more and that's the hurdle video games as art has to climb most times. This is an art game that has to sell at a massive level. You have to pitch artistic ambiguity on this huge stage. That's wild.
