If anyone is interested, here is Gouken's trial mode playthrough in HD.

It's helped me substantially so far.

Example:

Gouken uses an EX focus attack dash cancel (FADC) to extend this combo into his ultra.

j.H , s.H >> EX Senkuhoshoha (DP + p) >> EX FADC , Shin Shoryuken (his ultra, qcf, qcf + ppp)

Without the FADC you can't get close enough to the falling character to do the insane shoryuken.

You have to be careful with the FA on standing up - most characters can jump it and leave you open. That said I've had my face punched many a time to FA's from ryus and kens.

Realized you specifically said ultra and I gave you a super. The concept still applies you would just hit three buttons instead of one. The important thing is that some characters CAN combo into their ultra and others CAN'T. make sure you know if you character can or else you will be trying something that is impossible.

Also, here is a link to what cancelling means. If you need to know terminology the whole entry is pretty good.

Here is an example:

Sakura can cancel from her Hadouken (qcf + p) into her Super (qcb, qcb + kk). To pull this off you pull off a hadouken uppercut and just before she leaves the ground (2 or 3 hits into the 6 hit uppercut) you quickly pull off her super motion. The hadouken will stop it's animation and she will go directly into her super. It all combos together for 11 or 12 hits, cant remember. It's called a cancel because the hadouken never finishes. You still get the damage from the first half of the hadouken though. Combined it's more powerful than just a hadouken or just a super.

Make sense?

C. Viper is an expert character in my opinion, I would not suggest her. Don't use Ken, he can't cancel into an ultra and he telegraphs all of his moves. Stick to Ryu or if you want shoto style but something different then Sakura or Akuma are great. Akuma takes hella damage though so be careful. I also would not recommend Zangief unless you can pull off 360 degree rotations easily without jumping.

i have played some really good players on ranked. player matches tend to be ryu/ken spam fests though.

to answer your question: no, you cannot attack a downed opponent except for when they crumple after a focus attack. actually i would not consider that a downed opponent.

different characters have different strategies on wakeup. with sakura i usually time a fireball or a sweep to get them when they stand up. just try different attacks and timings to hit them right when they get up.
