BRENTOLAND'S OFFICIAL 2018 GAME OF THE YEAR LIST (Games I played this year may have come out last year)

2018 was a hell of a year for a lot of reasons. I just graduated college in December and have been practicing my writing and podcasting. But you know what I use to distract myself from crippling self esteem issues and my now looming student debt???

VIDEO GAMES BABY!

Here's my top 10 games of the year. Now granted there's a game or two on here that came out at the butt end of 2017, but there's no way I would've finished them last year so I threw them on here. Don't like it? Then fill out a complaint form here

List items

  • If you wanna get technical, this game came out in 2010 with an English fan translation coming out the year after. However the official English version landed at the end of last year.

Umineko is a large love letter to the golden age of mystery fiction with it's core theme being a "fantasy vs reality" mystery. It's incredibly hard to talk about what makes Umineko great without spoiling it. This is a sequel to the previous game "Questions Arc".

I'm not finished with it yet (I'm only halfway through Episode 7) but this is easily one of the best stories I've read. If you have any affinity for classic mystery stories, pick up the "Questions Arc" first on Steam. (The voice patch comes highly recommended.)

  • Xenoblade 2 was one of my favorite games last year and when they announced a story DLC as apart of their expansion pass, I was cautious. The story of Xenoblade 2 felt mostly complete.

Luckily, this prequel story is essentially a piece of originally cut content that has been expanded upon. The characters are great and it doesn't overstay it's welcome. The story has some revelations for things from the main game and despite being a prequel, new players shouldn't play it first.

  • Strange Journey was a game I had issues with on the DS that are luckily rectified here in this remake. The game retains it's great original aesthetics with it being more player friendly, expanding on the story, and comes with full Japanese voice acting.

  • While yes this is a PS2 game, that PS4 version came out this year. This might be the best mecha game ever released. I don't have anything else to say here, if you haven't played this then what are you doing???

  • Yeah this came out last year, but the PC version is out this year and I didn't consider this game officially out until it was completely retranslated this year. An absolutely incredible action game. Falcom delivered another great game

  • (Psssst. Hey you. Yeah you! I wrote a review on this game that you can read on my page)

  • Probably the best Smash Bros. game. I like that this has more single player content than Smash 4 and having every single fighter in the series is great.

  • Fantastic story and gameplay, but sometimes the side activities bring it down. This was a pleasant surprise this year and I'm glad there's a video game that get's Spider-Man right (Spider-Man 2 isn't that great, just saying)

  • Dead Cells enamored me for a month back in July. Runs were easy to pop in and do for a bit and then leave and come back later. Just a really great product all around

  • Hey I finally watched Dragon Ball cause of this (and the only anime podcast around, All Systems Goku). Has mechanics that are simple to understand but leave enough room for you to become better at it. I still suck, but this game doesn't!
