Best of 2016

Last year at this point (mid year) I had a few candidates, this year it took this long for me to have a single one. I hope this doesn't mean it's going to be a weak year. On the plus side I've been having fun gaming anyhow as there were plenty of good ones I'd overlooked the past couple years.

Now that the year is nearly over, the games have came out. So many last quarter of the year great game releases, making this a great year for gaming where I was thinking it might not be a banner year.

List items

  • I enjoyed the original, and like this one even more. It's a great game with wonderful humor and tons of missions. So much to do in this game and so much of it is based on interesting narratives vs. the usual generic non meaningful mini storylines.

  • I didn't expect to enjoy this enough to make the purchase, finally they had the open public beta (I requested but never got in previous closed ones). The more I played the more I thought it might be worth it and when Amazon offered me 20% off I jumped on it. Glad I did so, as I have had many hours of fun. This game does a great job of making PVP exciting and fun, even for people who don't usually enjoy it.

  • This came out of nowhere. It's difficult, yet doable (great difficulty/reward balance), which hooks me addicting me to progress. The ability to have other fighters able to retrieve the body (which maintains it's xp level) of fallen fighters keeps me going. Additionally I love fun varied classes and here they aren't specialized too much, but just enough to make it a blast to try each type extending the longevity of the game.

  • I've had my fun revisiting life of Corvo and Emily with their powers/abilities. This sequel plays very similar to the original. It's still enjoyable to wreak havok on clueless enemies and see the game ending and environment alter with your kill vs. knockout decisions.

  • I found this series soso until 3 which I loved. 4 is similar to 3 so I still really enjoy it, but it seems to lack the development time or design or perhaps was done by a lesser studio, not sure, but it certainly isn't as good or an improvement on 3. Still close enough to 3 to be a joy to play. Definitely not difficult, it's obvious the devs just went for fun and I appreciate that.

  • I barely touched the original, aside from swordplay and humor this sequel is a very different game more focused on guns, loot, rpg, and open world. I'd recommend this game to fans of the original as I found the melee even better in this sequel. I also recommend it to fans of Borderlands looking for a lite, cheaper, game as they keep waiting for a sequel. It was refreshing to see a game of this caliber come out for $40 and less with discounts and no micro transactions.

  • PC Edition: I expected to enjoy this game at least a bit. I hadn't expected to immediately like it, and not to the degree I do. I hadn't realized just how enjoyable aiming (oftentimes bouncing) bullets around a multilevel map would be. The random loot and multiple classes along with random perks as leveling make the game a joy to continue playing for many hours.

  • Thanks to heavy discounts I manged to give this game a try and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It has beautiful graphics and it is enjoyable to run around and explore the country while watching out for wild animals trying to hunt you and for you to tame. I think UBI did a big disservice to this game and Far Cry by putting that header on this game.

  • Pc Edition: It's uniqueness in the fps genre really makes it standout. No reloading, melee kill for health, saw for ammo, few weapons, multi vertical levels, ammo shortages (in bursts), and hidden loot all add up for a unique experience. The upgrade weapon and suit mechanics aren't unique, but give gamers the progression system they enjoy, I certainly do. Seems nowdays most innovative games have pixel graphics, it's nice to see a AAA title do something different and succeed.

  • This is for Dead Island Definitive Edition PC, been putting a surprising number of hours into this, so worth my 3 dollar investment. Playing Logan for the first time, it's too easy to just throw weapons and a big plus is they don't degrade when thrown. I've unlocked a ton of inventory so I can throw weapons all day long, kind of breaks the game's difficulty. Heck maybe that means this round I'll manage to complete the story.
