Make A Wish

So, I was just watching The Daily Show and the program turns to a discussion on the Supreme Court's ruling on the sale of violent videogames to minors. During the bit, John Stewart played footage of Noob Saibot's now somewhat infamous "Make a Wish" fatality (funny how it always comes back to Bi-Han) and for the first time ever, I felt kind of dirty for liking and playing a game. When you spend most of your time in regards to videogames surrounded by people who love and play them, it's easy to loose perspective. The rationalizations and arguments we make don't hold much weight with people completely out of the loop.

I'm not saying that I suddenly disagree with the Supreme Court's ruling or that I'm going to get rid of my Mortal Kombat disc, I'm just saying that for a moment I felt a little grimy and I was wondering if any of you had the same/a similar moment.

Having not see the show yet I would find it extreamly unfair for Jon Stewart to not mention the esrb and that video games sell less to minors than any other medium like movies/DVD/and music.

The video game is rated M for mature audiences, it is freaking mortal kombat.

@Dany: The main point of the bit was not that the Supreme Court ruling was wrong, but that it's reasoning that the federal government could regulate sexual content while it couldn't regulate violent content was absurd, and used Noob Saibot as an example as to why.

I was pretty disappointed to see Jon Stewart, an active participant in another sometimes controversial art form (comedy) to throw another under the bus for what wasn't even that good a joke. Especially when he then admits that he likes the game in his interview with Bill Kristol minutes afterwards.

I didn't feel ashamed afterwards, in much the same way a movie buff shouldn't feel ashamed when someone brings up The Human Centipede or someone mentions Yeval to a bookworm.

@hsvlad: I wouldn't necessarily say that Jon Stewart threw videogames under the bus, though I can see how it can be interpreted as such. I think he was just just trying to point out the absurdity of the Government regulating pornography but not violent material, since the punchline was to the effect of "had she suffered a nip-slip whil being disemboweled, then we would have had a problem."
