@planetfunksquad: Although I'd add that the term is almost exclusively used thusly, 'cause by and large those with any kind of intellectual wherewithal view it as lazy shorthand. Like, I'm all ears you wanna tell why Margaret or The Loneliest Planet or The Tree of Life or Journey or whatever didn't click, be it a lopsided dichotomy of aspiration and execution, a stultifying obliqueness that never quite crystallized into much of anything specific, what have ya. Basically, show your work, and we're cool, but as a general rule, I see pretentious bandied about without any kind of follow through, it's a tacit admission that you're not worth paying mind.
