Deepish Look: Brave Fencer Musashi- The B Movie of Action Adventure

Hey Duders,

Here is a Deepish Look! My usual Deep Look videos focus in on a cool gameplay mechanic or story element from a game I have played the heck out of, in the hopes that I can share what makes that mechanic so cool. This Deepish Look is a bit less critical and a bit more review-y or Quick Look-y. I still try to give some good insight into the game I'm playing, but this video is geared a little bit towards people who may not have played the game in question. Also I aim to keep the videos under 20 minutes.

In this Deepish Look I play through a bit of Brave Fencer Musashi and wade through the terrible voice acting that only 1998 could provide. Join me as I lament the unfortunate writing and character design that mar a potentially good game. The Allucaneet Kingdom has many wonders, including a California princess, an oldie English man, and a country bred robot-man.

It's stunning how the voice acting in this is just as bad as the acting in FF13-3. Square hasn't learned in 15 years.

Man, I remember being blown away by how the day/night system was implemented in this one. Everyone had their own schedules and certain events only happen on certain times.

@thunderslash: The day night cycle is still great in Brave Fencer Musashi. Unfortunately almost everything else has aged poorly...

@thunderslash: @thatpinguino: Try out Radiata Stories for a game with a ridiculously complex day night/character recruitment system and completely trivial actual combat; it's like some weird precursor to modern social games but the characters are charming and the world is interesting/actually has a relevant plot choice.

I played Musashi, though he's fairly underwhelming historically compared to Yukimura Sanada, Kenshin Uesugi, or Keiji Maeda. Was a fun/weird game and relatively unique, no clue what happened to my copy.

@fredchuckdave: Yeah it is weird that the day/ night cycle as core mechanic idea hasn't popped up more often. Its got a nice basis in reality and a lot of possible mechanical space. As for the Brave Fencer himself, I am not up on my Japanese history so I have no personal swordsman favorites. If Kenshin Uesugi was the basis for Rurouni Kenshin then he seems like someone to not be f'ed with.

@corevi: I don't know if you heard the voice acting that I captured in my video, but man FF13 era stuff is not NEAR that. Those voices are melodramatic in a mid-day soap-opera sort of way. Brave Fencer has voices that sound like a knock off morning cartoon. The voices are just so bad.

@ghostytrickster: I've never gotten that far. My personal favorite is the princess shouting "you little turd" at Musashi once he shows up.

Nice video, duder. I love this game. In fact, I might even call it one of my favorites of all time. Though I would really have to disagree about the voice acting and presentation. I mean, yeah, it is really super campy and hilariously bad, but I think that is a huge part of the game's charm, and without it, it just wouldn't be the same. Nearly everything else about the game does surprisingly hold up. I played through the whole thing for the first time in over a decade earlier this year and I still really loved it after all this time. A true classic in my eyes.

@onekillwonder_: I mean I think the voice acting is charming and "so bad its good," but I think none of that is intentional. The campy-ness of the voice acting seems like a happy accident. That said, I honestly wouldn't go back to Musashi that much if it wasn't for all of those absurd accents.

The gameplay does hold up surprisingly well, except for Musashi's tiny little arms and hit range. He has to be right up on an enemy to hit it and it can make hitting enemies more difficult than it should be.
