Best of 2010

2010 was kind a crappy year for me, but I still managed to play through a few game. Here are the ones I thought were the best!

List items

  • Putting all of the "games are art" crap out of the way, Limbo was one of the few games this year that I was genuinely excited to play, and I was not disappointed. I bought it as soon as it went up for sale, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's beautiful, challenging, emotional, and I love it.

  • While the Wii version was released in 2009, I played the PS2 version which came out in early 2010. This game was definitely an interesting take on the Silent Hill franchise, and while I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the "classic" Silent Hill games, it was still a very enjoyable experience.

  • Okay. I'll be the first one to admit that I was VERY skeptical when I heard that a sequel to Bioshock was being developed. I loved the first Bioshock for having it's own self-contained story and I honestly saw no reason for this game to exist. However, I picked it up very recently and decided that I'd give it a fair shot and god damn, I'm glad I did. I had a blast visiting new areas in Rapture, toying around with the new weapons, and working my way through the story. When it comes to the story, some parts are contrived, sure, but it still made me eager to find out how it ended and I wasn't disappointed in the least. While this may have been an unnecessary sequel to a great game, I'm glad it exists because it turned out better than I ever expected it to. (Also, that one sequence involving a Little Sister. You know which one I'm talking about. It was amazing.)

  • Once upon a time, before Giantbomb's Endurance Run was even a distant speck on the horizon, I saw a trailer for this game on Gamespot. Since I was starved for anything even remotely resembling a horror game, I decided that if I had the chance I would give it a try. I just so happened to be in an EB Games a day or so after it was released, so when I saw it on the shelf I picked it up. While the gameplay feels incredibly dated and the graphics certainly aren't up to snuff, I still truly enjoyed every second I spent playing this game. The story is what really drew me in, and I found myself glued to my chair for hours on end just because I couldn't wait to see what crazy shit happened next. Plus, York may very well be one of the most memorable video game characters I've ever seen. Needless to say, I was pretty pumped when GiantBomb started their Endurance Run of this if only because it meant I would be able to see how they would react to the absurdity that is Deadly Premonition.

  • I'm usually not very big on puzzle-based games, but this game really won me over. A wonderful sense of quirkiness and charm is present throughout the entire game, and even when I was stuck on a puzzle I didn't get frustrated. Plus, while not very impressive from a technical standpoint, the graphics have a remarkable sense of style that unfortunately isn't seen very often. All in all, The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom is just great puzzle game with interesting gameplay and a unique visual style that still sticks with me even though the game wasn't very long.

  • Being born in 1992, I didn't grow up with Pac-Man and I have no problem with admitting that I've never really cared about these games. It's not that I don't like Pac-Man, it's just that the games never really seemed to do much for me. So imagine my surprise when I decided to buy this game and ended up playing it for hours on end. Game developers, take note. THIS is how you update a classic franchise.

  • As someone who didn't really have much of an opinion on the first Bad Company, I was very surprised when I participated in the closed beta before release and found myself sinking hours and hours into that one map and game mode. Needless to say, when Bad Company 2 was released I bought it as soon as I could and sunk even more time into the online component. However, that's not to say that the single-player campaign was forgettable. Even though it was a tad more serious than the first game, it was still crazy and funny enough to be worth my time. Despite some problems present in the multiplayer (mainly laggy servers and spawncampers going unpunished),I still think that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was one of the best shooters to be released this year, if not THE best.
