tomservo50: Best of 2010

  • One thing that I like best in a game is a damn good story. That's why titles like KOTOR and Grim Fandango stick with me after all these years. No story was better this year than ME2, and add to that the fact that the gameplay was greatly improved and streamlined from ME1. Just an overall great, memorable experience. Not to mention playing as Lady Shepard gives you both a chance to romance Garrus and experience one of the few great female protagonists in a video game.

  • Again, great story and a great experience. I loved roaming through the wastelands of Mexico and the Western US, keeping an eye and ear out for deer to hunt and cougars to avoid. The game mechanics worked wonderfully (ie. horseriding and the use of classic guns, something not very many other games have succeeded at).

  • Yeah, I'm a fan of SP, so that probably influences my decision. This was a game that I would repeatedly return to for an hour or so of gameplay between playing other games. Fun but tough gameplay, great music and art style. In my opinion, the best of a great group of downloadable games this year.

  • It's Civ. Civ is always great, and this version manages to makes a series of wonderful improvements to make the gameplay even more engrossing than ever. Now if you excuse me, I need to finish up one more turn before the sun comes up.

  • Truth be told, I haven't actually played this game yet. However, this year was when I finally got around to playing AC2, and that was awesome. Since the gameplay appears to essentially be "AC2 with some improvements and multiplayer", it goes on my list. I look forward to my copy arriving in the mail in 2011.

  • So this is what being on "E" is like, eh.

  • I actually agree with a lot of the criticism directed at this title, primarily about the last half where the puzzles feel a bit uninspired and the creepiness of the forest is lost. Still, the art style is great, and the first half in the forest with the spider is some memorable, creepy stuff.

  • Thanks to some of the top 10 lists popping up on this site, I was made aware of this game and got through playing it before the year was out. Although I didn't get into the internet until the early '90s when BBS was making way for webpages, I still remember what some of those boards were like and this game was certainly a nostalgia trip. It is also a smartly told, memorable story. It's free, so scrounge around the internet for it and spend an hour or so to play it.

  • Cute, fun RPG. Not too difficult gameplay wise, but I enjoyed the story and Double Fine's type of humor.

  • Okay, sometimes story takes a back seat to blowing-shit-up fun, and this game certainly had that in droves (also at this point you can see how I am struggling to fill out my list since I didn't grab GoW3 yet and I'm not an RTS guy)
