" Alex had a column on GameSpot that still is my fave gaming column to this day. THe guys has mad writing chops and is honest in a way that doesn't sugar coat. If people don't like Alex, what does it matter? There are hundreds of game review outlets. They can go to one of those. "

I'm with you, Jay.  How can anyone who's ever seen Alex's Robocop review doubt this man's worth to society?

The videocard on my last laptop, a Gateway NX860X, died because it overheated (on Christmas day, no less).  This essentially killed my laptop because the video card was hardwired to the motherboard.

So, in your situation, I'd be a bit concerned.  If it's getting crazy hot, you could always try a notebook cooler.  I bought one for my new ASUS laptop and I love it.  Now my average GPU temp--even when playing games--is rarely more than 65 C.

I can understand your feelings about credit, but our modern monetary system is based on credit and lending so it's almost inevitable that people have at least one credit card nowadays.  Besides, cash is a pain in the ass.  My wife and I share a credit card, and we have our separate debit cards, but that's it.

I can't decide which order these should go in, but my top 5 would probably be:

  • System Shock 2
  • Final Fantasy X
  • KOTOR
  • Gothic 2
  • Parasite Eve

Honorable mentions: Mass Effect 1+2, Final Fantasy I + X-2, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Dragon Age: Origins + 2, Crystalis

I feel like I'm forgetting a ton of good games...

Soooo tempting...Mmmm, ham...
@KaosAngel: The original AVP Classic 2000 is also $5 and it will actually work on my PC (unlike my original copy, which isn't much more than a shiny frisbie or coaster nowadays).  Also, that one is actually a good game.

I have a feeling I'll be caving in and buying the modern AVP, though.  Who am I to say no to the almighty Steam sale?

I see what you did there. Nicely done.

PC - I'm just guessing, but it was either the originalLode Runneror The Ancient Art of War. Both were fantastic Broderbund games back in the day, particularly AAoW.  That's the one that got me hooked on strategy and RTS games.

NES - SMB/Duck Hunt; first one I bought was maybe Hogan's Alley.
Gameboy - Tetris; first one I bought: Castlevania Adventure
SNES - Super Mario World
N64 - Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
PS1 - FFVII
PS2 - FFX
DS/GBA - Metroid Prime:Hunters and LoZ: Minish Cap. (I never actually owned a legit GBA, so I just used the GBA port on the original DS)
PSP - Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
PS3 - Strangely enough, I think the first game I bought for my PS3 was actually FFXII.  Man, did their launch titles suck.
360 - Shadow Complex.
iPhone - Dead Space.

Steam's midweek madness this week is the 2010 reboot of Aliens vs. Predator, which got some pretty bad reviews.  I loved the old AVP's, and I do have an extra 5 bones lying around, but is this a good get?

What do y'all think? Buy or no buy?

I'm a big fan of Dragon Quest IX.  Don't worry about coming into the series late; I hadn't played a DQ game since the original Dragon Warrior on the NES and I felt right at home with DQIX.  (It's not a really "story-heavy" game, if you know what I mean).

@kuz101: Thanks, kuz.  I'm a huge PKD fan (and I'm guessing you are, too).  I just checked out Metacritic and they do seem to have a growing list of aggregate scores.  I'm hoping that will increase as time goes on.  Lastly, Game Dev Story is definitely on my "to buy" list.  I just bought this iPhone on Thursday, and I've already bought more than half a dozen games, so I told myself I'd take a break until I actually finish one before buying another.

Also, if anyone else is in the same boat as me, I just found this incredibly handy guide for new iPhone users on TouchArcade.  Thanks again to everyone on this thread for pointing toward that site.
