GOTY 2012

  • The original X-Com game is and always will be one of my absolute favorite games ever. It was one of the first games I got on my first computer back in the early 90s and I sunk hours and hours and hours into it (along with the original Civilization) during my first couple of years of high school. This update lives up to the promise of so many games before it that have attempted to be spiritual successors (and failed miserably). While I was a bit disappointed by the low number of squad members to control, wish there was more variety in mission types and environments, and have heard tales of considerable bugs (although I have only experienced one issue in my 3+ play throughs so far) the combination of unparalleled gameplay enjoyment and a beautiful nostalgic stimulation make this an overwhelming pick for my game of the year. Nothing else even comes close. But, hey Firaxis, bring back my Snakemen!

  • This is definitely my surprise of the year. It was completely off of my radar until the preview Quick Look from late July here at Giant Bomb. And, frankly, that video didn't impress me very much. However, when I finally decided to give it a try in October after hearing a growing amount of positive buzz, I was mortified by the fact that I didn't get it sooner.

  • I choose not to pay attention to all the weird side stories that have come out of the breakdown of the developer behind this action RPG. I also have chosen not to pay attention to the chorus of voices that are constantly calling this game a dull, uninspired, tedious simulacrum of games that have come before it. The simple fact is that I sunk nearly 100 hours into this game (including its two DLC expansion packs) and enjoyed nearly every minute of it. Maybe it doesn't break new ground or tell a highly original story or bring new and exciting gameplay elements to its genre, but what it does do is absolutely nail the execution and delivery of every aspect of this genre. And that is more than enough for me.

  • 2009's Borderlands was the first person shooter that I blame/praise for getting me over my serious anti-FPS bias. I chalk that up to its clean and accurate control, lack of claustrophobic feel, light RPG elements, and clear sense of progression.

  • I sunk into one of the most obsessive holes of gameplay addiction I have ever experienced in mid-May of this year when Diablo III came out.

  • It's pretty rare for me to get so caught up in a racing game that I spend 4 consecutive days off work playing one, taking no breaks to fit in other games. I raced through the content in record time for me, and probably gobbled up just about all of the gameplay that the game has to offer. It looks fantastic, controls perfectly and had enough variety in events that it is fairly likely that after the new year ascends I will pick it back up to try to get that pesky Notoriety rating up and finally win that damn helicopter Showcase race. The high season pass price tag and token in-game purchase system are pretty scuzzy (and very tempting), which is why this didn't end up higher on my list.
