"The Tick" is the Antivenom to Marvel's Toothlessness and DC's Grimdarkness

I didn't read a single comic that starred The Tick until I was in college in the mid-2000s. I watched the cartoon in the '90s, but since it was a Fox Kids cartoon, I had no notion of what the original author (Ben Edlund) had in mind for the series, that was meant to parody comics at the time. Whether it be a gun-mad Punisher joke of a hero, of which the Tick himself quips, "I think superheroes and guns DON'T mix..." or the absurdity of someone like the Human Bullet ("FIRE ME, BOY!"), the joke was well over my head. I thought all comics were weak and/or trying too hard simultaneously somehow. To be fair, it WAS the '90s and many mainstream comics WERE doing both those things.

I loved the 90s cartoon for various reasons, it was legitimately hilarious whether or not you understood what it was parodying, and when Patrick Warburton was tapped to bring The Tick to live-action, that seemed...like a natural role for him. He was a big fella and great at playing over-the-top caricatures of characters and ya know what? It worked. It was hilarious. It was also during the time that Fox was cycling through shows like toilet paper, so it fell by the wayside faster than nu-metal. But having gone back to it in the last year or so, it holds up shockingly well. Bat Manuel might be one of the funniest characters to ever grace a TV series.

Recently we got this new Tick. Played by Edgar Wright mainstay Peter Serafinowitz (who voiced the male Dark Souls 2 protagonist because he loved the franchise JUST THAT MUCH, and also starred as the baritone roommate in Shaun of the Dead, as well as Tim's romantic rival in Spaced), it seemed like a step in the right direction, but was The Tick, of all things, really worth bringing back so much that Amazon would risk building a franchise around it? The answer...appropriately, is YES. A thousand times YES.

Let's get this out of the way: I love modern comics (when they're not retconning pillars of American idealism into literal nazis). I love modern comic movies. I think most of them succeed on the vision of their creative team or fail on...well, the same. Or lack thereof. The first episode of The Tick, I didn't quite know what to think. It felt like it was going to be a simple, bog-standard parody of superhero stuff. Something like The Boys, a comic that wants VERY badly to let you know JUST HOW MUCH IT GETS superhero tropes and wants to subvert them (and wouldn't it be CRAZY if Superman was a thrill-killing RAPIST?! ISN'T THAT SUCH AN EDGY THOUGHT?!?!), only without the darkness that book contains. But then it interrupts its potential first storyline to take us on a trip into Flashback Land where our protagonist (Arthur) sees his father crushed by the falling ship of a superhero team...who are then executed in BRUTAL fashion by a supervillain who has used weaponized syphilis to melt their eyes. And this is the fulcrum upon which the series turns: ordinary tropes brought into harsh reality. To put this another way: imagine if Doctor Doom used concentrated jalapeno peppers to melt the Fantastic 4's eyes and then SHOT THEM IN THE HEAD. It's incredibly real darkness bookended by actual hilarious absurdity. The Terror, by the way, is played by the ever-creepy and always effective Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach from Watchmen, Freddy in the remade Nightmare on Elm Street, two roles that wasted him as an actor).

But then you have The Tick himself. And it would have been easy to have him be a grimdark, gritty version of the goofball hero that made him famous, but they save that for another character. Instead: you have the equivalent of Golden Age Superman falling into a SPAWN comic from the 90s: The Tick is perfect. He is indestructible and ultra-strong, but also pontificates to villains on their own motives and might as well be telling them to take their vitamins and say their prayers. All while the villains use guns and commit murder. Except when they try to shoot The Tick, the bullets bounce off him and almost always wind up maiming or killing them. A more perfect metaphor for the series as a whole, I could not imagine.

There's a lot more to the series, but it's hard to get into it without spoiling anything, so I just leave it at this: not since James Gunn's SUPER have I seen the genre so thoroughly and effectively parodied, and I don't see NEARLY enough people talking about it, so...here we are.

Edit: I've been corrected accurately that Serafinowitz voices a Dark Souls 2 character, not the protagonist.

I didn't realize that new show had started yet. I really want to watch it, but don't have Amazon Prime. Already have Hulu and Netflix, too, so I don't really see myself getting another sub, especially since it would mainly be for one show.

Guess I could get it for a month once all the episodes are out and watch 'em, then cancel.

I was a fan of the Tick cartoon back in the 90s, even though I was way too young to understand most of the jokes. I never saw the first live action attempt, only checked a few clips on YouTube years later, but it also seemed great.

As for this new live action show, I was really worried first. When the first picture came out the suit looked horrible, in this bright blue that didn't favor Peter Serafinowitz's face at all, making him look like a skinny old guy. The pilot came out and I forgot about it, only to be reminded almost an year later with the release of the first trailer. It had a new suit that looked way better, but the trailer itself was awful, with poorly timed editing ruining the jokes and a terrible music playing. I should also point out that I don't like the majority of super-hero movies and tv shows out there, so I was afraid this new Tick would be just like those.

Then, yesterday, I finally saw the first two episodes and I'm glad to say it's so much better that I could have expected it. It's the right blend of gritty reality with dumb goofyness and all of it seems to be self-aware, embracing it for what it is and showing how dumb super-heroes and super-villains would be on our real world. Peter Serafinowitz does a fantastic job, his range is like a mix between a bit of the cartoon Tick mixed with a bit of Warburton's version mixed with Serafinowitz's comedic timing that seems to have some influence from his work with Edgar Wright (one of my favorite directors, I loved Spaced).

My only negative point is how some details reveals that the show probably had a smaller budget and since this is based on super-heroes, it would be interesting to see what they could do if they could afford to be more bold and creative on shots and special effects. But, at the same time, the low-budget feel also adds a certain charm to the whole thing.

All I know is that I'm looking forward to watch the rest of the show!

The new Tick is fantastic, and really is what we need after so much "Avengers 7: This Time, Robots Or Something".

I too was concerned at the change in tone, but it totally works. I can't wait for more.

The series is great my only complaint is that there are only six episodes. Funny how taking the piss out of Frank Miller's Daredevil run gave us both The Tick and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I'll be honest, I saw the trailer and thought it looked awful, but these really positive impressions combined with my willingness to watch anything from the man who brought us Kitchen Gun means I'll probably end up watching it. Also, I quite liked the cartoon.

Also in Dark Souls 2 Peter Serafinowicz was Pate, who's pretty much the only possible substitute for regular old Patches.

...Why are we reaching a point where we cannot talk about something based on its own merits? Why do so many people see the need to compare unrelated products? Is this what passes for discussion nowadays?

"Unrelated" in that 'both products are based on a long-running comic book series, brought to TV/movies?"

Better question: Why are we reaching a point that we just read headlines and comment before reading the actual articles/posts?

This thread just reminded me of Amazons Zombie Land pilot. Did anything ever happen with that? I think I remember liking it. I think.

My guess is he means why disrespect 2 other things to start a discussion on another. TBH it kinda turned me off reading as well, like why can't i enjoy all 3?

Also, we have been past the point of only reading the title, especially since you kinda went out of your way to call out 2 other properties instead of just basing the tick on it's on merit (in the title at least). It's borderline click bait imo, maybe something like "The Tick is the Antivenom to modern Comic Cinematics" Sorry if i am coming off wrong or aggressive, i'm sick and on cold medicine so i can't really tell what tone is coming off with this lol, but i do think i can enjoy all 3 on their own merits.

Anyway, i was a fan of the cartoon and i remember liking some of the original live action so i will probably check this out since i have prime.

I did read your "article". It's a forum post, btw. A large deal of it actually deals with other topics than it does the Tick.

You know what else I read? Your post's title. You chose to make a clickbait-y title. That's on you. You went with a title that's straight out of Jezebel. You could have gone with something simpler that would bring more attention to the Tick's new show and talk about how good it was. But of course, like most writers nowadays, the only way to talk about something's quality is to shit on something else.

For what it's worth what little there was about the Tick kinda convinced me to check it out, but man - we really don't need to put something else down to elevate another product. It's a turn-off. It just comes off as prematurely defensive for no reason whatsoever.

@shagge: THE first real, calcified thought I had was : this is pushing the envelope of superhero fiction in a way that isn't trying too hard. The scene with the Terror executing the Flag 5 and then taunting Child Arthur was legitimately disturbing, but STILL wasn't rubbing it in the audience's face with "LOOK HOW FUCKING EDGYYYYYYYYYYY WE'RE BEING!!!!" The Terror is, appropriately, scary in a way that a comic movie villain hasn't been since Heath Ledger's Joker. BUT he's also somehow legitimately hilarious when he needs to be ("Ya don't kill people because they make fun of ya...ya kill people because it's FUN!")

@brackstone: The trailer is ABYSMAL and one of the reasons it took me so long to bite the bullet and give this a shot. It's totally worth it, especially since at 23 minutes/episode, the whole thing can be watched in ~2 hours.

@d9000:Thanks! I really liked the first 6 episodes and have no one to talk to about them, so I had to get all this off my chest.

@sravankb: It's a blog post that was also posted to the forums, if we're going to get pedantic. I was more commenting on people's habits of reading a headline from a news source without reading the article.

And since I'm not being paid to write it, which is I assume why you chose to scoff at my off-handed referral of it, why should I care if it gets clicks? And how is it "clickbait-y," exactly? Clickbait is misrepresenting what an article is to get you to click on it, ("IS SCARLETT JOHANNESON IN A LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP WITH CHARLIZE THERON??" <click> No. Here are some pics of them on the red carpet together.") And since it IS a blog post, I chose to inject my own opinions into it so people wouldn't just glance at it and think "Well, I don't really like Marvel or DC's TV/movie offerings, so if this is just another superhero deal, I'll pass."

There's a difference between making something eye-catching and clickbait. And yeah, since I'm NOT being paid, I'll format it however I want. I actually love Marvel's cinematic offerings, but they are toothless, and DC is utter trash at this point. Since I don't really slag off either one in the actual content of the article, I felt it was important to let people know where I'm coming from and that I have knowledge of both since I talk a lot about subversion of genre tropes in the meat of the article.

And for what it's worth: I don't care if you check it out or not, I more want to discuss it with people who have, whether or not they liked it.

@oursin_360: You're doing a lot better with not coming off aggressive than the original call-out post, so let me give a gentle reminder that clickbait implies untruthfulness, and I go out of my in the article to say: A) I actually REALLY like Marvel's cinematic offerings and B) here is why The Tick is so great at subverting those genre tropes of both.

And here's the thing: YOU can enjoy all 3 if you like. I certainly don't , but that's also why I go out of my way not to slag off anyone who does in the article. It's not like I'm saying, "You DC fanboys might not be able to handle having a little actual levity injected into your grimdark bullshit!" nor would I because I actually DO want to talk about The Tick.

And yeah, it's an eye-catching title, because I want to attract people for discussion. If I used your example (which was a fine one), then people might have just rolled their eyes and thought, "Oh, ANOTHER superhero thing? No thanks." but by saying "This is unlike what most superhero media is," it becomes at least more eye-catching. And honestly? I was originally just going to have DC in the title, but I thought that was unfair and would run the risk of painting me a non-critical fanboy. It's less clickbait (since I don't get paid whether 1 person or 1000 comment) and more "Here is a brief summary of where I'm coming from. Let's talk!"

And like you: the heat's getting to me, so I'm hoping I'm not coming off as condescending or aggressive toward you.

@corwag: Zombieland bombed... It (despite being good) could not get people past the lack of the actors from the movie. I honestly feared the same issue with The Tick when they didn't get Patrick Warburton to do this series. Luckily people seem to not be as offended about it in this instance and hopefully this show lasts a good long while.

@synthesis_landale: Likely because people were already used to seeing The Tick have multiple incarnations (and the excellent quality), it wasn't AS weird to see someone else playing him, because...well Warburton was TECHNICALLY someone else playing him.

@undeadpool: haha, when I started reading your reply I thought "oh no, it's some kind of spam-bot". I have cable which means I have no money for extra streaming services or online shopping. But someday in the beautiful future when I can watch live sports on a quality streaming service I'll definitely consider amazon prime.

I saw the show and it was pretty decent. Serafinovich does not fit the character (physically) as well as Warburton, but his comedic timing is pretty good.

I have to ask... is the 6 episodes ALL there is? I watched them thinking there was more coming out down the pipeline, but now it seems like that was the ENTIRE first season.

Technically the season was split since it was seen as a risk for Amazon to take. The second half comes out in "early 2018" at this point.

And I'll take an actor who can, well, ACT over one who more accurately physically embodies a comic character. Not to take anything from Warburton, he was perfect, but Serafinovich's Tick-by-way-of-Adam-West is so tonally pitch-perfect for this series, I'll accept the fact that he's a little more slight. It's like people who want Brock Lesnar to play Venom, despite the fact that anytime he tries to emote, he sounds like a psychotic pterodactyl.

Wow! Huge thanks for the heads up on this show not only being out but also good! I kind of had no idea that it's even possible to make a good live action the Tick, but this is genuinely funny, touching and on point with the style of the cartoon. Its especially impressive that they managed to create a straightforward storyline in the really chaotic and absurd world that the Tick takes place in. Really excited to see more.

@zagzagovich: I definitely had doubts too but had a day to kill, so figured I'd give it a chance. What an unexpected treat!
